Brooke Williams | Finding The Perfect Escape
Author Guest / September 4, 2020

There’s a lot going on in our house, how about yours? My husband and I have two little girls, ages 7 and 11. They talk non-stop. He and I have to text one another if we have something to say, that’s how bad it is. When school started up again, we had the choice–to send them back full time with masks or to keep them home for distance learning. At the last second, fully intending to send them back, we decided to keep them home. So, my husband goes off to work in the morning and I am home, helping my 7-year-old with place value and my 6th grader with simplifying fractions. I have my own job, too, in the freelance writing world, writing blogs for clients numbering into the hundreds each month. Oh, and I dabble in fiction writing as an author as well. There are days when all goes well, and everyone gets everything done and we’re all happy. And then there are days when things go, well. . . not so well. You know what I mean. It doesn’t matter what your life looks like, you have great days and you have days where all you want…

Christina Henry | Exclusive Excerpt: THE GHOST TREE
Author Guest / September 3, 2020

The shade of the trees made her feel better almost immediately, although the headache didn’t disappear–just receded a little bit, like a fighter taking two steps back before charging in again with a flurry of punches. Still, she thought she might be able to get to her bike and make it home without fainting, which was the key thing. Lauren had almost reached the ghost tree and her bike when she felt it–a strange sort of shifting, although the shifting wasn’t anything external that she could tell. The trees all stood in their usual places and the wind rustled their branches like always and her feet were firmly planted in the ground and her stomach wasn’t even queasy any longer. But still–there had been something. A feeling that made her skin prickle and her left eye twitch and cold sweat pool at the base of her spine. She shook her head even though it made her headache feel like it was knocking from side to side inside her skull. Those were all things that happened to other people when they walked in the woods that bordered Smiths Hollow. They got spooky feelings and broke out in a sweat and talked…

Jane Kirkpatrick | 20 Questions: SOMETHING WORTH DOING
Author Guest / September 2, 2020

1–What’s the name of your latest release?  Something Worth Doing published by Revell. The title comes from a definition of hope by Vaclav Havel, a writer and first president of the Czech Republic.    2–What is it about?  On the surface, it’s about an early suffragist in the northwest named Abigail Scott Duniway and her passion for improving the lives of women in a time when women were to be seen and not heard (1850s-1890s). At another level, it’s about a woman wanting both a career as a novelist (she wrote 22!) and newspaper owner and to be a faithful wife and mother (they had six children!) while maintaining her reputation in a time of great cultural change and the challenges those two goals can have. 3–What word best describes your main character(s)?  Resilient. 4–What makes your story relatable?  Many modern couples struggle with balancing family and callings, supporting each other while facing trials. Long-distance relationships are also prevalent now and Abigail often was away from her home for weeks at a time doing something worth doing. How that worked for them I think will be of interest to today’s readers. There’s also a bit of family tension as Abigail’s brother…

Bea Koch | Exclusive Interview: MAD & BAD: REAL HEROINES OF THE REGENCY
Author Guest / September 2, 2020

Hi, Bea! Welcome to Fresh Fiction. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your new book, MAD AND BAD: REAL HEROINES OF THE REGENCY.   Hi! I’m one of the co-owners of The Ripped Bodice (the one not allowed on a ladder). I’m a romance fan and a historian. Those two things have always been tied together for me. I’ve been reading Regency romance novels since I can remember. This book is a love letter to the Regency time period and the fascinating, rule-breaking women who lived and loved then.   The Regency is an interesting time in England’s history. What made you focus on it? I grew up with the Regency. All those early 19th-century romance novels showed me that this was a time period worthy of study because it had inspired this enormous fictional response. Jane Austen is perennially popular. Byron is always a good time. The Regency is full of so many characters we’re familiar with, and then there is also this world of just as exciting characters (many of them women) who haven’t enjoyed as much recognition from historians and pop culture. I wanted to spend time with those women.   There are so many different women represented…

Stefanie London | 20 Questions: HER AUSSIE HOLIDAY
Author Guest / September 1, 2020

1–What’s the name of your latest release?  Her Aussie Holiday 2–What is it about?  Her Aussie Holiday is about a house-swap that gives an American woman more than she bargained for! Wanting to escape a failed relationship, her parents public divorce and career dissatisfaction, Cora Cabot decides to swap houses with her Aussie BFF. Only, when she arrives in Patterson’s Bluff, her friend’s older brother is camped out in the house and . . . well, hilarity and trouble ensue. At the heart of it, this story is about following your dreams, taking risks and learning to believe in yourself. It’s emotional, has loads of comic relief (including a potty-mouthed cockatoo named Joe) and definitely delivers a feel-good happily ever after. 3–What word best describes your heroine?  Resilient! Cora is the kind of woman who gets knocked down but keeps getting back up again. 4–What makes your hero irresistible?  Everything! Seriously, Trent is one of those heroes who has it all. Hot, blue-collar body, charming smile, sense of humour and a big golden heart that he wears on display at all times. Oh, and a delicious Aussie accent. Who says you can’t have it all? 5–Who are the people your…

Kianna Alexander | My Favorite Romance Tropes & Themes
Author Guest / September 1, 2020

My favorite tropes to write have traditionally been Friends-to-Lovers and Second Chance romance. The reason is, out of all those familiar tropes, those are the two I’ve seen played out in reality most. There’s something hopeful about them, and while not every pair of friends can morph their relationship into a healthy romantic one, and not every relationship deserves a second chance, there’s definitely some appeal there. More than tropes, though, I have favorite themes. My main one is redemption because I believe that those who truly want to right the wrongs of the past should have a chance to do so when that redemption doesn’t lead to the ill effects for someone else. Another theme I often write about is self-discovery. That’s been a big theme in my life, especially over the last few years. My characters are just imperfect people, looking to be loved in a healthy, fulfilling way and that something I think we all want, regardless of orientation, gender, race, color, or creed. When reading romance, which I don’t get to do as much as I’d like, I read pretty widely, without regard to trope. I do have a few tropes I won’t read, including racists…
