Harry Hunsicker Signing – NEXT TIME YOU DIE
Guests / July 21, 2006

Harry Hunsicker Signing Originally uploaded by freshfiction. We went to the party at the Cigar Bar in Javier’s Gourmet Mexciano Restaurant in Dallas to celebrate the release of Harry Hunsicker‘s latest thriller — NEXT TIME YOU DIE. Set in Dallas, and being labeled as “Dallas Noir.” NEXT TIME YOU DIE is the second outing with Lee HENRY Oswald. Some film critics in the group think “Dallas Noir” is a bit far-fetched since the amount of rain in the book was minimal. But you have to work with what you get, and Dallas is going through a drought thank you very much. The other elements of noir were VERY present and enjoyed by this reader. Including shady characters, a cold-blooded siren, and a fast-paced read through “mean” streets and back alleys of Dallas. Poor Hank, he’s got a long road to travel very quickly, finding a missing folder for an alcoholic Baptist preacher brings back some bad memories and characters from the past to mix with a current ecclectic group in his present. NEXT TIME YOU DIE was a great read and should NOT BE MISSED! Visit FreshFiction.com to learn more about books and authors.

Book Expo 2006-Arrrgh! Pirates in the food court Originally uploaded by freshfiction. From May 2006 — some of the Fresh Fiction team members attended the Book Expo in Washington, DC for THREE DAYS. I emphasize the THREE DAYS because it is a grueling but exhilarating experience. However, our Miss Gwen is the one who attracted all the eyes — in this case Captain Jack Sparrow — the swaggering sea worthy! We’re not sure which book he was hawking, but he was definitely interesting. We also saw JENNIFER WEINER and many more, some pictures are in our Flickr account under Book Expo. We invite you to check them out. Visit FreshFiction.com to learn more about books and authors.

Guests / May 7, 2006

Shanna Swendson at Borders Uptown Originally uploaded by freshfiction. ONCE UPON STILETTOS is now in stores! And it was all over the Borders in Dallas Uptown! And we were there to get our copies (reading plus contest ones) during her Sunday signing. Out on the street — they were giving away free copies of the new coffee coca cola drink but inside we were having fun chatting about Katie’s next adventure in the NYC. In ONCE UPON STILETTOS, Katie’s parents win a trip to visit her for Thanksgiving and her roommates are ecstatic — Momma cooks a mean Thanksgiving spread even if there’s a difference of opinion over the type of dressing. Plus her relationship with fellow immune, lawyer Ethan is heating up! But what happens when there’s a spy in MSI and Katie’s tasked to find the culprit? Plus. what’s with the red shoes? Sure, they’re a bargain but suddenly Katie’s living the “Sex in the City” life as Carrie! No man can resist her! Magic, skeleton gangs, and chaos ensue! Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did! The deli scene is priceless!! And I knew those garden gnomes were up to something! Visit FreshFiction.com to learn…

Bob Mayer Presents….

Bob Mayer Presents…. Originally uploaded by freshfiction. Thursday, May 4, 2006, after 32 days on the road, the traveling show of Jenny and Bob (romance novelist Jennifer Crusie and techno-thriller writer Bob Mayer) arrived at Rainy Day Books in Fairway, Kansas, to a full house. Jenny and Bob have been on a nationwide tour promoting their first collaborative effort, DON’T LOOK DOWN (St. Martin’s hardcover, 4/06). By now, both of them were exhausted and anxious to return home for a respite. However, their bantering and interaction with the attendees at the booksigning kept everyone laughing. When the final question was a request for them to read from DON’T LOOK DOWN, they were shocked. In all their appearances, they said no one had asked them to read an excerpt. After much reluctance, especially on Bob’s part, Jenny selected a section and they shared the recitation. A fun booksigning followed with Bob applying the appropriate ending – an alligator stamp at the bottom of the signature page. In July 2007, the Jenny and Bob duo will have another collaboration released — AGNES AND THE HITMAN — who knows what will happen after that. Animal books on the rise…
Guests / October 13, 2005

A frantic day — the MOTOR was late with technical difficulties, don’t we all share those at times — so I was scrambling to re do my schedule and for those who know me well, it isn’t always a pretty sight! but I digress… Dogs — cats — pets. Lots of books on our companions are being shown this week on the talk shows — first one to catch my fancy was the one by the psychic Sylvia Browne and her son, also, gasp, a psyhic, about pets in the ever-after life. Are they running out of things to write about? Sorry, but it was the first thought that struck. However, having lost a beloved family member in the past year, lordie, it’s been over a year now, I still mist up when I think of Larry. Not only that, I have his photo keeping me company every day in my office. Of course, he does have competition from Lex and Winston, Lex being the pushy jealous type. But what kind of people would read a book about their pets in a spectral life? I don’t know, I just like to think Larry (and Lady and Ling) are off enjoying…

Leanne signs copies of Feet First
Guests / September 8, 2005

Leanne signs copies of Feet First Originally uploaded by freshfiction. We had a fabulous time on Wednesday night at the GRAND LUX CAFE at the Galleria Dallas. Appetizers were plentiful and varied, entrees were delicious, with enough for everyone to have a “lunch” bag, even those who shared, and the desserts — well, you just had to be there *grin* And, oh, yes, a delightful guest! Ms LEANNE BANKS regaled us with stories of her family — so like ours — her books and her life on the road, uh, just navigating in Texas, etc. *grin* FEET FIRST is now available and it is a fun fun read. We highly recommend it and hope to see Leanne again when she hits North Texas once — can’t always promise you a convertible, though. Visit FreshFiction.com to learn more about books and authors.

Ever Read the Award winners?
Guests / August 7, 2005

I guess this goes along with the movies too, but how does knowing a book took a prize affect your consideration of the book? I just posted the 2005 RWA RITA(tm) winners here and I found that only a few had been entered in the database at all — which means no one else requested them in the past year. Odd, don’t you think? And when I entered them, a good third are no longer in print (the category ones) with no plans to reissue them — even a small print run. So what’s the point? I don’t mean this in a mean way, but is it just a small pat on the head? I’m confused (and have been about this for years). If a movie is nominated for Golden Globes or Oscars or even Palm de Ore (spelled wrong I’m sure, but too busy to go and look it up at the moment), they release, perhaps in small theaters, but at least they do in the big cities, so viewers have the opportunity to go out and check it out. Sorry, cash in on the award so to speak. But the Ritas don’t make that happen at all. If…

Cool down in Texas heat with…
Guests / June 2, 2005

Ever thought about reading a “winter” mystery during the hot, hot blaze of a Texas summer? Well, I didn’t until M. brought a new book to my attention. It’s a novel idea, don’t you think? What better way to cool down then to think SNOW. Like the old movie, Holiday Inn, I’m singing off-key in my head “snow, snow, snow…” but I’m not getting any cooler. In the fifth installment of the Emma Fielding series the archaeologist-turned-sleuth (isn’t that an interesting career shift?) finds herself knee deep in snow and trouble during an archaeological conference when her esteemed colleague. Professor Garrison, is found dead on the iced-over lake at the New Hampshire hotel. Did she kill off her boss or did someone else have a grudge against her peer? You’ll have to read MORE BITTER THAN DEATH to find out. Visit FreshFiction.com to learn more about books and authors.
