Plum & Grey are definitely not boring
Guests / June 27, 2005

Plucky kick-ass heroines both, Stephanie Plum and Aisling Grey. I have just one problem with them. They kind of fumble around, get involved in things they shouldn’t and make decisions without garnering hardly ANY information. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to think if I was gonna be a kick-ass heroine I’d also want to be smart. Smooth even. In Janet Evanovich’s latest number, 11 if you’re counting, Stephanie decides to quit the bail bond business because someone from her past has threatened to kill her. Granted, she kills a car in all her books, but she has gotten sort of used to that. This new threat forces her to become more introspective and question where her life is going. Marriage, kids, learning to play the cello… Wait!! We cannot have Stephanie Plum decide between Morelli and Ranger. If she did, there would be no more reason to read the series! Speaking of decision making difficulty, Aisling, that’s ASh-ling to you peons not yet corrected by the author herself, is in Budapest this time and still can’t commit to becoming a Wyvern’s immortal mate. Jim, the demon-dog is back, and a good thing since he has become one…

Finally an Answer to my copyright page question
Guests / June 22, 2005

This may be of no interest to anyone but myself, but I’m going to share it anyway. We’ve talked many times as a group about ISBN numbers, Wal-Mart’s involvement of the evolution of UPCs and copyright pages and what info you can glean from the bits listed there. While researching an unrelated matter on the web (isn’t that always how the most interesting things are discovered) I found the following: Q. I would like to know what the numbers on the copyright page represent that are written:14 13 12 11 10 09 08 07 06 05 1 2 3 4 5, for example. A. Impression Line. The first group of numbers refers to years (2014 to 2005), and the second group indicates the impression number. The line tells the reader that this is the first impression, printed in 2005. If the next impression were printed in 2007, the printers would mask the numbers 05 and 06 in the first group and the number 1 in the second group, so the following line would appear: 14 13 12 11 10 09 08 07 2 3 4 5 This would tell readers that it was the book’s second impression, printed in 2007,…

Bitten, Stolen & Lost Sleep
Guests / June 7, 2005

I apologize in advance for any mistakes ths post will have. I haven’t slept the past 2 nites. Two good friends, who shall remain blamed not blameless, got me hooked by giving me the first two books in the Kelly Armstrong “Women of the Otherworld” series. You might say on Sunday night I was BITTEN, and Monday night was STOLEN from me if you were as slap happy as I am at the moment. I am truly surprised and thrilled to find a new take on a genre I thought was “So Five Minutes Ago”. Now, must cut this short since my husband is back from the bookstore with DIME STORE MAGIC; the third book in the series. My own copies of these two titles along with INDUSTRIAL MAGIC and HAUNTED(just released) should be here in a few days from Amazon. Maybe before they get here I can get some sleep!! Jedi Knight or Wookie
Guests / May 25, 2005

I just finished a book that would have made GREAT reading while waiting in line for Episode III. Too bad that’s not when I was reading it. In her latest release, THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY MEN I’VE DATED, Shane Bolks references Star Wars more times than any die hard fan wearing a cheap black cape, shiny black mask and breathing heavy would. She cites Yoda as one of the greatest philosophers of all time and classifies men into two categories; Wookies or Jedi Knights. Bet you can’t guess which is better?? I thought I was really going to enjoy this chick-lit book, catchy title, cute cover, but by Chapter 5 my patience was wearing a little thin with the “Ultimate Jedi Plan”. My low tolerance for this genre (It does have the obligatory Manolo Blahnik shoes) is well known by those around me, but sheesh people, high school shouldn’t be the defining time of your life. That being said, I wanted to read more to see who Princess Leia wound up with, the Wookie or the Jedi. And, the supporting characters were quirkily entertaining. It didn’t send me into hyperdrive, but it’s not from the dark side…

Unzipped
Guests / May 17, 2005

I’ve just finished reading Lois Greiman’s first mystery novel Unzipped and it is very entertaining. I realized just how much I liked it when I immediately started reading the teaser chapter for the next one at the end. Normally, I skip those because I don’t want to be tormented by the wait until its release since it can be up to a year away. Anyway, this book will hit the shelves on May 31st. If you’re looking for a recommendation, pick this one up. Visit FreshFiction.com to learn more about books and authors.
