Fresh FIction Box Not To Miss

Anna Bradley | Grumpy Earl + Fierce Governess = Fireworks

December 21, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

FELL IN LOVE WITH AN EARL

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Grumpy, wounded earl meets fierce governess heroine, add kittens and mischievous twin boys, hijinks, and romance ensues!

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Well, this is the third book of the Games Earls Play series, and in the previous book I’d already settled Helena, the heroine in a small village near her sister’s country estate. For both books I wanted a country setting not too far from London, so I settled on Oxfordshire.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely! She’s incredibly kind but fierce, plus she loves cats! What’s not to like?

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Grumpy (at first), protective, loving.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

This book reminded me of something I learned long ago, but sometimes forget, and that’s to try not to make assumptions about people, because we never truly know what they might be going through. Adrian doesn’t appear to advantage at first, but it’s grief that makes him difficult, not arrogance.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I tend to edit as I go. I don’t necessarily recommend this, by the way! It can get a little confusing at times.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

It depends on the season. In the summer we eat a lot of tomatoes and basil from our garden. My favorite is bruschetta, with really good mozzarella! In the fall I love sour apples with cheddar cheese, and at Christmas, pecan pie.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

The thing I love most about my office is my desk, which I inherited from my mother. It’s a beautiful pale cherrywood, and it reminds me of my childhood. Otherwise, I have a lot of overstuffed bookshelves and usually a very large, very furry black dog spread out on the floor.

10–Who is an author you admire?

There are so many! For historical romance, I love Minerva Spencer and Kerrigan Byrne, but I read a lot of contemporary fiction, as well. I just finished Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere. Highly recommend!

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Too many to count. I first became interested in historical fiction the way a lot of us did – by reading Jane Austen! Stephen King’s ON WRITING changed how I look at writing, so it’s in there, too.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

You never forget that moment! My agent called me and told me that my first two books, A Wicked Way to Win an Earl and A Season of Ruin got picked up by Berkeley. I swear for a few seconds I just froze. I couldn’t believe it. Then we both screamed!

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

You know, I go through phases with genres. Lately I’m reading a lot of contemporary fiction as well as contemporary romance, and loving it! I get into periods where I read thrillers and mysteries, too, but my first love is always historical romance.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

It’s too hard to pick just one! Lately I’ve been into the Spiderman franchise, which is very uncharacteristic of me, since I’m not really a fan of superhero movies, but Spiderman is the exception.

15–What is your favorite season?

Autumn, hands down. I’m from New England originally, and we love our fall leaves!

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Quietly, lol. Once you’ve had as many birthdays as I’ve had, you like to keep them on the down low. I’m all about doing low key birthdays with family. And cake, of course. Lots of cake!

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I’m a faithful listener of The Moth podcast. I love it because it’s all about storytelling, and I love stories. For a TV series, The Bridgertons, of course! I love Shonda Rimes’ shows in general – she’s amazing.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Toss up between Indian and Mexican!

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Hang out with family and friends, walk the dog, and read, of course. I never get tired of reading. Lately, I also sleep, because I’m just finishing up a book and it’s meant a lot of late nights and early mornings, so I’ve been napping when I can.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Well, there are still two more books to come in the Games Earls Play series, and then I have a new series coming out in 2023, all about wicked dukes! It’s called DROP DEAD DUKES, and the first book, GIVE THE DEVIL HIS DUKE, releases in July. I can’t wait to see what readers think of it!

About Anna Bradley

Anna Bradley

Anna Bradley has been an avid reader, writer and book fondler since childhood, when she pilfered her first romance novel and stole away to her bedroom to devour it. This insatiable love of the written word persisted throughout her childhood in Maine, where it led to a master’s degree in English Literature. Before she became a writer, Anna worked with a rare books library featuring works by British women writers from the 1600s through the Regency period. Here she indulged in her love of stories, fondled smooth, leather-bound volumes to her heart’s content and dreamed of becoming a writer. Anna writes steamy historical romance (think garters, fops and riding crops) and squeezes in a career as a writing and literature professor on the side. She lives with her husband and two children in Portland, OR, where people are delightfully weird and love to read.
