Catherine Bruns | Conversations in Character with Sally Muccio Donovan

September 25, 2023

Book Title:             BAKE, BATTER, AND ROLL

Character Name:  Sally Muccio Donovan

How would you describe your family or your childhood?

My parents are a bit on the strange side. I love them to death (excuse the pun), but they’re not your typical parents. They march to the beat of their own drummer. My father has a weird obsession with death and owns a funeral home. It’s been his lifelong dream. My mother, at the age of 55, still shops at Forever 21. When people see us together, they automatically think that she’s my sister. My younger sister. It’s a little hard to take at times.

What was your greatest talent?

I’m proud to say that I have turned into a good baker. I still can’t cook, but at least I can bake.

Significant other?

My husband, Michael Donovan. We’ve been married for four glorious years.

Biggest challenge in relationships? Hmmm….well, based on past experiences, I’d say stop and listen to each other. You can avoid years of problems by doing that. Trust me.

Where do you live?

Colwestern, New York. It’s in Western New York which means that we get about 50,000 feet of snow every winter.

Do you have any enemies?

I’d like to say no, but after being involved in over a dozen murder cases during my lifetime, I’m afraid the answer is yes.

How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?

I’m in a good place mentally if that’s what you mean. I’d like to stop finding dead bodies. I swear, it must have something to do with the homemade fortune cookies we give away in my bakery. The messages are eerily foreboding and always come true.

What do you do for a living?

I am the proprietor of Sally’s Samples, a novelty cookie shop.

Greatest disappointment? That Mike and I wasted ten years of our lives apart because of a stupid misunderstanding. On the bright side, it makes me want to make the most of every day we have together.

Greatest source of joy?

My family.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?

Watch movies at home, take my daughter Cookie to the park, etc. I just enjoy being with my family.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?

My best friend, Josie, says that I am too nice and let people take advantage of me. Maybe I was like that once, but not anymore. Life has made me tough. It must be the murders.

What keeps you awake at night?

I worry about the bakery, especially now that we have no customers. See answer to question 14 below.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?

That’s a tough one, but I just found Smiley Jones, game show host of Senior Moments, dead in my bakery. He was beaten to death with my rolling pin. So, I’d have to go with that.

Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have?

I’d like to have more children. Oh, and get the murder hex off my head.

Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?

My Grandma Rosa, who is the most wonderful person in the entire world, says that maybe these murders fall into a lap as a sign. She thinks it’s my density to help people. Okay, she really means “destiny,” but she gets her sayings mixed up a lot.

Cookies & Chance Mysteries #13

Bake, Batter, and Roll

From USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bruns comes the next deliciously delightful Cookies & Chance mystery!

Full time baker and part time sleuth Sally Muccio has witnessed many bizarre events during her lifetime. But one thing that she never expected to see was her sensible grandmother on a dating show.

Senior Moments, the popular reality TV dating show featuring the aged sixty-five and older, has come to Colwestern, New York, giving the mature community a chance to find their soulmate. In an attempt to keep peace with the cranky and cantankerous Nicoletta Gavelli, Sal’s Grandma Rosa agrees to become a contestant along with Mrs. Gavelli on the TV show. But things take an even weirder turn when the show’s host, Smiley Jones, is found dead in Sal’s bakery, beaten to death with her rolling pin.

The last thing Sal wants, or needs is to get involved in another murder, but she soon discovers that Smiley Jones’s life wasn’t all champagne and cookies. From an estranged wife with dollar signs blinding her vision to a dressing room full of debts, Smiley had many issues to keep him from grinning. Between the calamitous contestants, the stacks of suspects, and the danger mounting, Sal is worried this is one Hollywood production without a happy ending. Can Sal find his killer before she winds up battered as well?
