Christi Barth | A STEM Heroine and a Hero Who Was a Spy

March 24, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

THE EX SPY WHO MAYBE LOVED ME

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

What happens when your off-the-charts hot, one-night stand…shows up at your office? Find out in this small-town rom-com with a buttoned-up STEM heroine and a hero who was a spy until 4 days ago!

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

This is book 2 in my Swan Cove series. Book 1 features a small-town mayor, so the first requirement for the setting was, yup, a small town (fictional, based on Camden, Maine). I wanted it on the coast because I love the beach and writing about it every night helps me survive until my next trip. I already had a small-town series (Bad Boys Gone Good) on the Oregon coast. Going to the opposite side of the country felt like a good way to keep it fresh for my readers.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Maybe? She loves musicals, like I do, but she is super obsessed with her molecular genetics research and in all honesty, most of that (while awesome) goes right over my head. I think she’d be great in a friend circle, just not as my BFF.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Driven. Lonely. Determined.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

All the science things! I researched ‘top 20 science innovations of the past year’ to figure out what my heroine could be working on. The results were literally mindboggling. Here’s the link to what I based her research on: https://www.technologynetworks.com/genomics/news/blind-mice-regain-sight-after-single-gene-insertion-316835

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I’m sort of a one and done girl. A lot of plotting, and then a super clean draft that I turn in.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Pate? Gelato? Super not healthy….but sooooo delicious.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

Small, lol! A poster with lots of hearts on the wall, bookcases, an out-of-control ZZ plant that just keeps growing despite my lack of TLC, a shelf full of essential oils and a diffuser, and lots of notebooks filled with story ideas.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Julie James. Her banter is spot on. Same with Lauren Layne. And on the PNR side, Chloe Neill. All banter goddesses.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Nora Roberts’ Chesapeake Bay saga, starting with book 1, Sea Swept. I read these while we were contemplating where to move after Chicago. Her books inspired me to throw Maryland on the list. We made a reconnaissance trip, and six months later moved to Baltimore! (At a signing once, I tried to tell her that I moved here because of her book, but I fear I came off as a stalker rather than someone who adores the Chesapeake Bay).

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

My wonderful publisher, Liz Pelletier, had a working session with me to streamline ideas that would be ultra saleable, rather than wasting time writing a synopsis for something that just wasn’t hot right then. She was so generous with her time, and that collaboration led to a six-book contract that floored me. I believe my now-departed editor gave me the actual news, but I knew while I was talking to Liz that magic was happening and Entangled would contract for the books.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Urban fantasy romance. Borderline with paranormal romance, because those two genres bump into each other all the time.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Impossible to answer. But I did just watch a bunch of Oscar nominated films to prep for the Academy Awards, and I have to say that Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is thoroughly heartwarming and delightful (with drop-dead gorgeous costumes).

15–What is your favorite season?

Winter. I’m definitely one of those people who get annoyed when somebody complains about the excess heat/cold 17 days into a season. I relish every day of fabulous and stormy weather. I grew up in Los Angeles, and all I wanted was to experience four full seasons. My first requirement for an undergrad was that it have snow. And I LOOOOOOVE it. So I’m perfectly happy now, bundled in my parka in a wind storm 4 days before spring officially begins.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With champagne and my husband. Those are the only two necessities. But presents are always gratefully accepted.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

TV: Masters of Sex – brilliant. Movie: The People We Hate at the Wedding (on Prime) – hilarious. Book: How to Fake it in Hollywood by Ava Wilder – so freaking good. Podcast: Solar – a fiction podcast about a space mission to the sun that goes very wrong. I’m obsessed.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I’m a massive foodie. I’d say my go-to is Italian, but I will gobble down any and everything as long as it is good!

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Hahahahahaha. Not so much a thing when you release four books a year. But I do adore cooking with my husband, going to the symphony and the theatre. I’m headed to two Broadway shows next month!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Since it only came out a few weeks ago, I’ll mention my second-chance rom-com, travelogue-to-Italy ESCAPING VALENTINE’S DAY. Next month I have a short story coming out in the ROYALS anthology with oodles of ultra-talented authors. Then in October is HELL OF AN ANGEL, my next paranormal rom-com.

THE EX SPY WHO MAYBE LOVED ME by Christi Barth

Swan Cove #2

The Ex Spy Who Maybe Loved Me

NYC is exactly what scientist Blake Montgomery needs. A little decadence and a whoooole lot of anonymity, well away from the prying eyes of her charming, touristy small town of Swan Cove. Now, at the end of a whirlwind trip, she has one final thing to cross off her to-do list: a sexy fling. And the hot, green-eyed stranger at the Maine airport bar might be her perfect one-night stand. Until, of course, he shows up in her town the very next day.

Wyatt Keene is just an average guy—now. But four days ago, he was a black ops intelligence agent who spent fifteen years being someone—anyone—except himself. For one hot night, Blake makes him forget he’s supposed to start his life all over again…as himself. Talk about mission impossible.

Except suddenly Wyatt and Blake are not only stuck in the same town together, but also sharing the same office, and there’s no escaping their scorching hot chemistry. Wyatt’s trying to convince everyone, especially Blake, that he’s just a normal guy—whatever that means. But nothing spells danger like trying to start a relationship with an ex-spy who hasn’t quite left his old life behind…
