Book Title: BOAT GIRL

Character Name: Caitlin Davies

How’s high school going for you?

I was having a perfectly respectable high school experience until my parents insisted we move to the British Virgin Islands for a year. Now my life is all shipwrecks and attack-lemurs! To be fair, though, the guys here are pretty cute. So are the lemurs.

What is your greatest talent?

I am very organized. This talent is somewhat undervalued by my peers, but just wait until the time comes to fill out FAFSA applications. Then they’ll find out.

Significant other?

I’m working on it.

Biggest challenge in relationships?

Authenticity. And wardrobe malfunctions.

Where do you live?

A hotel called the Pickled Pirate. It’s a long story.

Do you have any enemies?

No! I’m a nice person! Well, those drug smugglers weren’t my biggest fans, but we worked it out. And I really do not care for chickens; they are chaotic evil.

How do you like the British Virgin Islands?

I mean, it’s hard to complain about pristine beaches and crystal-clear water!

Really? Because I just finished reading Chapter 4 and—

I said hard, not impossible.

Do you have any pets?

I have a little brother, and he’s kind of like a pet. He’s cute and he bites.

Greatest disappointment?

Did you know Netflix cancelled Marie Kondo’s Sparking Joy after just three episodes?! That was a dark day, my friend.

Greatest source of joy?

Cleaning. Or nachos. It’s a tie.

What do you do to entertain yourself?

Sadly, I no longer have access to my best friend’s streaming subscriptions, but I have recently discovered pirate romance novels. I really like pirate romance novels. Hey, this looks like a pirate romance-friendly website. Got any recs?

What keeps you awake at night?

Oh, no, I don’t have that problem. I avoid screens before bedtime and take melatonin.

Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have?

A lifetime subscription to Hulu+, a lunch date with Kamala Harris, and, well, there’s this guy I like…

BOAT GIRL by Elizabeth Foscue

Boat Girl

A Misadventure

From the author of Pest—a Washington Post Noteworthy Book—comes a hilarious uniquely daring new novel that showcases the author’s talents at their best.

Fifteen-year-old Caitlin Davies’s life is challenging enough. She’s short. She’s scrawny. She prefers Evernote to SnapChat. She’s two years younger than everyone else in her grade. And now her parents are taking the family to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) . . . for a year. To live on a derelict sailboat, bought sight-unseen from navigationally-impaired cigar smugglers. So when her best—and only—friend suggests she use the move as a chance to reinvent herself, Caitlin has nothing to lose.

And it works. People (plural!) in the BVI actually like her, and not only because of the interesting stuff she found beneath her new home’s splintery floorboards. Even Tristan, the cutest guy on the island, is beguiled by her easygoing air and artfully padded bikini top. She just can’t help wondering, though, if New Caitlin and the real Caitlin have anything in common. And when the sailboat’s former owners come looking for their forgotten contraband, she wonders if she’ll ever get the chance to find out.

With a fresh style and perspective, and bursting with humor and charm, Boat Girl is a quirky and fast-paced YA coming-of-age story that will leave you breathless and wanting more.
