Irene Hannon | 20 Questions: SEA GLASS COTTAGE

April 8, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

SEA GLASS COTTAGE

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Can a woman on a mission and the man she betrayed make peace with their past and open their hearts to a new beginning?

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

This is book 8 in my Hope Harbor series, so of course it takes place in my charming Oregon seaside community of Hope Harbor – where hearts heal…and love blooms!

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Yes. I admire her spunk and strength and the way she’s transformed her life.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Honorable, strong, wounded

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Quite a lot about the ins and outs of family law.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as a go, then do a final read to smooth out any rough edges.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Dessert – preferably rich, decadent and chocolate! But I don’t indulge often.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

Years ago, we turned a spare bedroom on the second floor into an office for me. It has a built-in L-shaped desk with cabinets above, a comfortable chair for reading (which I rarely use, as I’m always at my desk), a bookcase that holds some of my awards and the foreign-language editions of my books, and a photo collage of pictures from my community musical theater productions (my not-so-secret passion).

10–Who is an author you admire?

Too many to mention, all for different reasons.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Rather than one book, I’ll say the Nancy Drew series and the books by Emilie Loring. I devoured those novels as a young girl, and they gave me a love for the romance and romantic suspense genres that ultimately led me to write in both.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

SEA GLASS COTTAGE is my 62nd  book and is part of a multi-book contract, so there was no “call” for this book. But I well remember the call for my first book. I’d been shopping it for years with no success while I worked my day job in the corporate world. One day, while on a business trip to California, I came back to my hotel to find a message from my mother (pre-cell phone days). I called her back, and she said someone from a publishing house had called. (I was living at home at the time.) Since it was late in the day, I had to wait until the next morning to return the call. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep much that night. So first thing the next morning I called the editor back, and she said the words I’d been longing to hear—they liked my book and wanted to offer a contract. I’ll never forget the euphoria of that moment after so many years of rejection letters!

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Usually contemporary romance or women’s fiction.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Almost anything with Cary Grant – the consummate romantic leading man.

15–What is your favorite season?

Spring.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I love to go on a day-long adventure with my husband, followed by a nice dinner—plus cake at home with my brother and his family if they’re available. I still miss the days when my mom used to make my favorite meal every year for my birthday, though.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I recently enjoyed Come Back to Me by Jody Hedlund, a split-time/time travel romance. It’s not a genre I usually read, but the premise of this one intrigued me, and it didn’t disappoint.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Continental and regional American—but I love to try new types of food.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Free time? What’s that? Seriously, I have almost no down time these days between aggressive book deadlines and caring for my father. But I do love singing, performing in community musical theater productions, hiking, and travel when time permits.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Book 3 in the Triple Threat series, BODY OF EVIDENCE, will be out in October. In April 2023, I’ll once again take readers back to Hope Harbor. And I’ve signed a new contract for a three-book suspense series that will debut in October 2023 – plus more Hope Harbor books. So watch for many more stories from me in the years to come!
