J.E. McDonald | 20 Questions: CAGED FURY

October 6, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

CAGED FURY, book two of the Goldenlach Ridge Shifters trilogy.

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

When a tenacious bobcat shifter is captured and caged to be sold off as sport for hunters, she must put her trust in the person she got captured along with her in order for them to escape—or die trying.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

This book is set in Alaska, an entirely different location than book one in the series, but still northern. I needed a remote location for the antagonists to be able to conduct their experiments in relative seclusion, and an abandoned wildlife rescue ended up being a perfect choice.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely! She would be fantastic to go camping with. She’s level-headed, outdoorsy, and has a great sense of humor.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Survivor, sexy, and deadly

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned a lot about Alaska and how it’s both similar and dissimilar to my home province of Saskatchewan, where book one in the series is set. There are mountains in Alaska, whereas there are low-lying rock formations in northern Saskatchewan. Both are ruggedly beautiful.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Usually, I write the first draft all the way through before I do any major editing. If I get any big ideas about major changes along the way, I’ll make notes in square brackets in the place where the change needs to go, often at the top of a chapter. My first drafts can look quite the mess when I’m done, but I find that system works the best for me.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

It’s a toss-up between cheesecake or guacamole and chips.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

We’ve just moved, so now I have an actual office! I still need to put up a bunch of shelves, and make it homier, but at least I have a door to close now. Previously, I was working in the corner of my dining room, so this is a big, positive change for me.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Katee Robert. She writes fantastic, sexy books is an advocate for the marginalized, and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

I don’t know about my life, but Story Genius by Lisa Cron changed the way I write for the better. It is absolutely my favorite craft book, and I will recommend it to anyone who asks.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I received an email from the acquisition editor at City Owl Press not long after I’d submitted my full manuscript to her. She called my main character “captivating” and I posted that email on my wall for a while after. It was the BEST feeling.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romance, of course! Within that genre, my favorites, are paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy, contemporary and historical. It really depends on my mood, but it has to have spice and a happily ever after.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

I can’t just pick one! The three movies I’ve probably watched the most are: Spaceballs, The Fifth Element, and Pride and Prejudice. Ha! Quite a mix, right?

15–What is your favorite season?

Spring! Winters can be very long here in central Canada, so when spring hits, it breathes new life and optimism in me.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Quietly. I’ve never been big about throwing parties. An ideal day would be a massage, a mani-pedi, an afternoon at a bookstore, a small dinner with my favorite people, a piece of cake, and something sparkly from my husband.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I’m absolutely loving Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It has that older, Star Trek style with a new freshness to it. A beautifully done take on a classic.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Again, I can’t pick just one! My top two are Indian and Mexican.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

What’s free time? LOL. I love to read, quilt, go camping, and play video games with my girls.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Book three of the Goldenlach Ridge Shifters will release in spring of 2023. This will conclude the series and answer all those pesky questions readers will have after book two. And I’ll also be revisiting Wickwood to finish of the Wickwood Chronicles series in the next two to three years.

CAGED FURY by J.E. McDonald

Caged Fury

Captured, caged, and brought to an unknown location, Sabrina Covin is controlled by a deranged doctor and sociopathic businessman. She only has one chance of escape, but that means she needs to put her trust in the person whose tortured screams reach her through the walls. Can she count on him as an ally or will this tormented soul become her biggest enemy?

Walker Hayles is no stranger to being held captive. Former military turned freelance investigator, he might have been doing a friend a favor, but it landed him in a whole heap of trouble. What he doesn’t expect is the woman who got him abducted in the first place to come to his rescue. Or that his shifter instincts tell him they are fated mates—instincts she doesn’t seem to share.

When the pair make a break for it, will distrust and resentment lead them right back in the hands of the enemy, or will they find solace in each other’s arms?

About J.E. McDonald

J.E. McDonald

J.E. McDonald was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, The Land of the Living Skies. As a child, she was either searching the clouds for identifiable shapes, or star-gazing way past her bedtime. She cut her teeth watching Star Trek, James Bond movies, and reading the Harlequin novels her mother left in the bathroom—which resulted in an extremely skewed sense of sex education by age eleven. All of these factors contribute to her love of writing rom coms with a paranormal twist, romantic suspense, and far-future romance.

J.E. resides in Saskatchewan with her husband and three daughters, a stay at home mom by day, and an obsessed writer by night.
