Fresh FIction Box Not To Miss

Jeannie Chin | Small-town Fun and Unexpected Love

March 13, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

THE HOUSE ON MULBERRY STREET

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Free-spirited artist Elizabeth and solid, dependable Graham have been best friends for years. One problem–he’s secretly been in love with her for exactly that long.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The fictional town of Blue Cedar Falls, North Carolina, has been one of the main characters of this small-town romance series. It was the perfect setting for Elizabeth and Graham’s story of finding love and creating a home together.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Definitely! She’s fun, quirky, and creative.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Strong, grounded, underestimated

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Exactly how wide of a state North Carolina is! I lived in Charlotte for years, and loved going to both the mountains and the beach. But when it came time for Elizabeth and Graham to road trip from their mountain town in the far western part of the state to the beach on the east coast of it, I was somehow shocked by how long of a drive it would be!

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I save almost all of the edits until the end. Occasionally I realize that I left something out that’s crucial for what I’m about to write, and I’ll go back and add it in. But otherwise, I try to keep my blinders on and race toward the finish.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Does homemade bread count? Building my baking skills has been a passion of mine these past few years, and there’s nothing like a fresh loaf you made yourself.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I have an office in my home, but it’s mostly where I keep all of my books and folders full of research and notes. My favorite writing indulgence is when my family is all off at work or school and I can sprawl out on the couch and really get lost in the story.

10–Who is an author you admire?

This is so hard to choose! I’ll say Helen Hoang. Seeing great Asian American representation, along with neurodiverse representation and math nerd representation in amazing romance novels has been such an inspiration.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Twilight! It’s probably a little embarrassing but getting swept up in the Twilight craze brought me out of a years-long reading slump and reminded me how much I love a good romance. It inspired me to write again for the first time since I was in college!

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I found out that the Blue Cedar Falls series would be published in early spring 2020, back when we had first gone on lockdown, but still thought it would end in a matter of weeks. I remember being so excited to share these books with the world, but also just a little bit scared about how I would manage to get them written without daycare. It ended up being a challenge, but one I wouldn’t trade for anything.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I read a little bit of everything, but contemporary romance will always have my heart.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

While You Were Sleeping. So many romantic comedies from the eighties and nineties feel so dated now, but this one holds up!

15–What is your favorite season?

Late spring. I love feeling the warmth return and watching the world come back to life after a long winter.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

A nice quiet day to myself to read, write and watch movies, followed by a dinner out with my family and as much chocolate cake as I can eat.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Heartstopper. This series gave me ALL the feels.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Is it cheating to say variety? I love planning meals so that every day is as different from the last as possible. It’s such a joy and privilege to be able to enjoy flavors from every corner of the globe.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Knit and binge watch whatever series has most recently stolen my heart.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

More romance featuring Asian American characters living their best lives and finding true love.

Blue Cedar Falls

The House On Mulberry Street

For these two best friends, sharing a kiss might be the worst mistake of their lives—or the best thing that’s ever happened to them.

Struggling artist Elizabeth Wu has always been the black sheep of her idyllic hometown of Blue Cedar Falls. She’s disappointed her perfect family more times than she can count. This time, though, things are going to be different. Tired of teaching paint and sips and working at her family’s inn, she’s determined to get her career off the ground by launching an independent arts festival. So what if the odds are stacked against her? She has her wits, a diploma from the school of hard knocks, and her nerdy best friend Graham to help her.

Graham Lewis has plans of his own, though. After years of being Elizabeth’s platonic best friend and roommate—and secretly being in love with her—he’s decided it’s time to move on. He’ll help her get her festival off the ground, but it’ll be a last hurrah. He’s moving into a house of his own. But one impulsive moment—and an even more impulsive kiss—and all his cards are on the table. Elizabeth suddenly sees him in a whole new light, and she likes what she sees. But can they really rebuild their entire relationship—as well as build a festival and her reputation—from the ground up? Or will it all come crashing to the ground?
