Book Title: DEADLY FROST

Character Name: Sparrow James

How would you describe your family or your childhood?

Hi guys. Sparrow James here. I grew up on the west coast with a nature-loving family. My love of birds came from my mother, hence my name, but I got the biology bug from my father. I love field work; however, I don’t like the water. You see, my father was a marine biologist and I nearly drowned while on the ocean, hence my choice of wildlife biologist where I can keep my feet firmly on the ground. I have one brother and one sister. My entire family has been my rock after everything that happened. You’ll have to read the book to learn the details.

What was your greatest talent?

I’m a black belt in Taekwondo. After growing up petite and people constantly underestimating my being able to take care of myself, I decided to master Korean martial arts. It has proved invaluable ever since.

Significant other?

Well, now, that one is tricky. You see, I had a fiancé. He was a fellow wildlife biologist like me, but he disappeared two years ago when we were on a field assignment, and I haven’t seen or heard from him since. That is what caused me to spiral downwards. I got a second chance to move east and start over, so I took it and haven’t looked back. I never expected to feel something for Ranger Greyson Adler, but I do, and that’s the problem.

Biggest challenge in relationships?

Getting men to take me seriously because I’m petite. Also, I’m afraid to take a chance on love again and get hurt. That’s not something I’m sure I could relive.

Where do you live?

Coldwater Cove is a quaint, seaside, fishing village in northern Maine. It’s breathtaking with its rocky shores, jagged cliffs, and majestic mountains. It can be brutal in the winter, but the other seasons are stunning and make it worthwhile. The deep, dark, powerful ocean will make a person contemplate their role in the universe.

Do you have any enemies?

I didn’t think I had any enemies, but when my research assistant goes missing and strange men start shooting at me, I begin to wonder if I’m the connection.

How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?

People come to The Cove looking for something, but The Cove has a way of giving them what they need instead of what they think they want. I’m here to rekindle my career, but I never imagined my love life would get rekindled. The last thing I wanted was a relationship yet that is exactly what I need.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?

When I grew up with my family out west, we had pets. Now that I moved east, I don’t have any. I have always wanted children, but after suffering a tragedy, I’m not sure a baby is in my future.

What do you do for a living?

I am a wildlife biologist who specializes in birds. In Coldwater Cove, I’m restoring the habitat deep in the woods inland, documenting and studying the migration of many species to the coast.

Greatest disappointment?

My greatest disappointment is with myself. I didn’t handle my fiancé disappearing very well and the tragedy that followed, self-medicating and nearly ruining my career. Therapy helped me past all of that, and I am proud of the person I have become.

Greatest source of joy?

The work that I do. Conservation of birds. I love my job, my new town, the friends I’ve made, and the hope I have for my future.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?

I really am a workaholic. I do like to go out to eat with my new friends because I am a terrible cook. I love to hike and do anything outdoors, except swimming because of my fear of the water.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?

I failed myself in the past, but I am on the right track now. I am determined to stay that way. I put others first too many times, when I should be the star of my own life. I’m finally focusing on what I want and what makes me happy.

What keeps you awake at night?

The lack of closure. It’s hard to move on with my life when I don’t know what happened to my fiancé. The scenarios that run through my head torture me.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?

Finding my research assistant before it’s too late. I can’t have her go missing while on assignment with me, never to be seen or heard from again, just like my fiancé did. No matter what I have to do…I can’t let history repeat itself.

DEADLY FROST by Kari Lee Harmon

A Coldwater Cove Novel #4

Deadly Frost

A perilous new beginning…Wildlife Biologist, Sparrow James, has spent her life trying to prove she is good enough. She is excited about her new job as a bird conservationist in Coldwater Cove, and hits the ground already pushing the limits. On assignment with her research partner, deep in the woods before the leaves finish dropping and the harsh winter sets in, they run into a middle-aged man who looks like he’s spent a lot of time in the wild. He seems a little off, but he moves along. They think he’s gone, but come morning, Sparrow’s partner is missing. Sparrow returns to the Cove, frantic. The police organize a search party, thinking her partner is lost. Sparrow believes she was kidnapped. Sparrow is the only one who can identify the man, but no one will take her seriously. Greyson Adler is a park ranger and a survivalist. After hearing her story, he offers to be her guide and help her look. They stumble across an illegal arms deal going down, and are now on the run themselves. Forced to accept help from the very man they’re hunting if they’re going to make it out of the woods alive, Sparrow realizes there’s more to Greyson’s story than he led her to believe, and her research partner isn’t the only one in jeopardy of disappearing for good.
