Kristen Ashley | 20 Questions: SMOKE AND STEEL

December 8, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

SMOKE AND STEEL

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

This is always the hardest question to answer mostly because I talk too much so I’d probably corner whomever I was pitching to, and we’d go up and down five times before I got it all out!

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The story and characters decide for me. The characters pretty much decide everything. Always. I’m at their mercy.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. She’s the bomb-diggity!

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Broken. Gorgeous. Loyal.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That, even though I’ve been married, I’ve never been the white dress kind of girl…and that’s okay.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Edit as I draft. Though, I always do several read-throughs as I’m writing and when I’m finished to make sure (hopefully) that I closed all loops.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Foodie, as in well-crafted and curated food? Something with an amazing sauce, like bearnaise or hollandaise. The secret is always in the sauce!

9–Describe your writing space/office!

Lots of gold, silver, glitter, pink with the occasional tiara resting here or there (not kidding).

10–Who is an author you admire?

JR Ward, Taylor Jenkins-Reid, Sarah J Mass, Judith McNaught, Barbara Hambly (sorry, I couldn’t list just one).

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

To Kill a Mockingbird, because it shaped who I am in my life. The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, because it showed me how beautiful a story can be if you fully develop the characters, warts and all. Anything with Judith McNaught, who taught me how to write a beautifully crafted romance novel.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I published my first book myself after years of rejections. Six months later, I was fielding offers from publishers.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romance. Second favorite (right now), Thrillers

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Star Wars, though it was hard not to list Ever After here!

15–What is your favorite season?

Autumn. It’s about the sweaters! Though I live in Phoenix, so even Autumn is pushing it with sweaters.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

100% YES!

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Wednesday. It’s spectacular. I’m trying to talk my girlfriends into a party where we have a black, tiered cake with a working guillotine at the top and we all dress in versions of Wednesday. They’re in!

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I have to pick? Impossible! Mexican. Indian. African-American. Thai. Chinese. Italian. Should I go on?

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Shop. Cook. Movies. TV. READING! And I try to horn in some time to do something active, like yoga, Pilates or hitting the gym in my building.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’ll be dropping a gothic-esque, murder mystery romance on Vella in February 2023, if things work out. Then I’m unleashing The Girl in the Woods, the second in my Misted Pines thriller romance series in March.

Wild West MC Series #2

Smoke and Steel

She wasn’t a white dress type of girl…

Hellen Moynihan didn’t have dreams. She had goals. She knew who she was and what she wanted. She also knew what she didn’t. So when her long-term boyfriend didn’t make the grade, she moved on. And when her best friend’s boyfriend showed signs of being a scam artist, Hellen was on the case.

And he wasn’t a white hat type of guy…

Dustin “Hardcore” Cutler didn’t have dreams or goals. A troubled past led Core to do something irredeemable. The only thing he and the men of the Resurrection MC could do was vow to live their lives making up for an unforgiveable act.

And they did.

This duty leads Core to being a part of a covert protection detail, looking after Hellen Moynihan when trouble is coming to town.

At first, Core finds this dynamo of a woman intriguing, but he’s decided she’s off-limits.

Then Hellen and her friend wade into a multi-state swindling scheme.

Suddenly, off-limits for Core is out the window.

He’s got no choice but to get up close and personal.
