Lisa Roe | Author-Reader Match: WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

April 5, 2022

Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match” where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It’s our great pleasure to present Lisa Roe!

Writes:

I write humorous women’s fiction with a hint of romance. I call my work “mom-com” because it is a funny, but emotional and very honest look at mothering and a mother’s story. I want to write about how fiercely we love our children, the lengths we will go to make them happy and protect them, but also about how we are only human and that we mess up. Sometimes often, regardless of our best intentions. I also love to explore the world outside of our nuclear family—neighbors, friends, parents, lovers—because after all, we are more than simply someone’s mom.

In my debut, WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD, Ginny, an artist, and single mom from Queens, finds that after years of struggling to make ends meet, a second chance at love might come with the added benefit of helping her give her quirky eleven-year-old daughter Harri everything she never could before, when her new husband asks them to move into his home in an upscale New Jersey suburb.

But then she meets the neighbors.

About:

I was an advertising copywriter and creative director in New York City for many years until my son was born and I realized my nanny had the job I really wanted. I started writing fiction to entertain my kids, but as they grew, I decided it was time to start telling my own stories.

What I’m looking for in my ideal reader match:

  • Someone who loves Lorelai and Rory and gets a kick out of badly behaving moms—Queen bees, Real Housewife wannabes and PTA CEOs.
  • who roots for a second chance at love
  • wants a new girl in town with some tough shoes to fill story
  • can’t get enough of a book about fitting in or standing up for yourself

What to expect if we’re compatible:

  • A good old side-eyed glance at suburban life
  • Close, charming, sometimes snarky mother/child relationships
  • Stories about single moms doing their best for their kids while trying to navigate life, love, and friendships.
  • Expect to meet some quirky, charming characters…
  • …and some really badly behaving ones
  • Hopefully you’ll be snort-laughing while you read

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD by Lisa Roe

Welcome to the Neighborhood

A heartwarming and life-affirming story of family dynamics, mother/daughter relationships, and second chances—perfect for fans of Maria Semple and Abbi Waxman.

After years of struggling to make ends meet, Ginny, a single mom from Queens, falls for a hard-working and loving man, and relishes the idea of moving with her quirky eleven-year-old daughter Harri to his home in an upscale New Jersey suburb. Though she’s never been impressed by material things, she is thrilled that getting a second chance at love comes with the added bonus of finally giving Harri everything she never could before.

And then she meets the neighbors.

Ginny is quickly thrust into the complicated realities of a neighborhood defined by the ever-shifting alliances of PTA moms, Real Housewife contenders, and their mean-girl daughters. When the neighbors’ secrets, back-stabbing, and bad behavior take a devastating toll on her daughter and new marriage, Ginny must decide what really matters—and protect it at all costs.

About Lisa Roe

Lisa Roe

After graduating from the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and spending many years as an advertising creative director and copywriter in New York City, Lisa Roe accepted the tougher job of stay-at-home mom and turned to writing fiction — mostly to entertain her kids, but then to tell her own stories. A classic first born, a reluctant empty nester, and a Dr. Doolittle wannabe, Lisa lives in New Jersey with her husband and three incorrigible dogs. WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD is her debut novel.
