Liv Arnold | 20 Questions: STEPPING STONE

September 13, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

STEPPING STONE

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Stepping Stone is an erotic suspense with humor and heart. As I’ve experienced anxiety most of my life, 10% of profits will go towards Anxiety and Depression Association of America (still finalizing). My main male character experiences PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I got inspiration from a friend who served in the army in Afghanistan. The novel also features characters from the LGBTQ community.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I’ve always wanted to go to San Francisco. It’s a challenge to write about a location I’ve never been before. The place has a bustling financial district. Stepping Stone is based on an investment firm, Stone Corp. I used to work for a big four bank for years, and boy, there was some dodginess.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Absolutely. Jenna Kravitz has a wicked sense of humor and gets into awkward situations. My favorite line of hers is, “God, Desiree was louder and more obvious than two robots having sex on a tin roof using bubble wrap as a condom.”

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Snarky, strong, confused.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Through working with a sensitivity reader, I learned of the prejudice and stereotypes a bisexual individual faces.

I also read a lot about computer hacking. Some of my friends work in IT and explained the basics. If only I could use these learnings to make buckets full of money.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit when I’m finished. If I keep editing as I write, I’ll fixate on every word.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I can easily eat an entire wheel of cheese in one sitting.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I write at my desk in the living room and it’s a mess. There’s stuff everywhere. Scientists say smart people are messy. I’m going to go with that.

10–Who is an author you admire?

New York Times bestselling authors Meredith Wild, J. Kenner, and Cherry Adair write authentic characters with relatable issues. If you enjoy romance, buy their books now. In each book by these talented ladies, I squealed, sighed, and swooned. Their steamier scenes have me loosening up my collar.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Not so much a book, but an author—Enid Blyton. As a kid, I would visit the library and borrow every one of her books. Her work took me to another world. I wanted to go to midnight feasts like the girls in the boarding schools.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

There was no acting cool on my part. I replied, full of typos with an enthusiastic YES.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I’m a mood reader. I enjoy romance with sex scenes so steamy, I’ll look around to check if anyone realizes what I’m reading.

Other than that—thriller, women’s fiction, young adult, fantasy, and literary fiction.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

The Harry Potter series. My home is filled with merchandise.

15–What is your favorite season?

Summer. I love ice cream. And swimming, even though I don’t know how.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Sleeping in followed by eating so much tastiness, my stomach would explode, and I’ll pass out in a food coma under the table.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

The movie Malibu Crush by James Pratt. A fun comedy about “two idiots” who pretend to be highly acclaimed film school students to impress an ex-girlfriend.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Pasta smothered with cheese. Sometimes I make a big batch and eat it for all meals during the week. Apparently, Sophia Loren never said, “Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.” I’ll still choose to believe it.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I think about what I would like my funeral song to be. I’m tossing up between, “Another One Bites the Dust”, and “Stayin’ Alive”, or for everyone to dress up as zombies and dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m writing Stepping Stone’s sequel, that is a standalone. Each book is based on a different female character who works in the company Stone Corp.
