Maddison Michaels | The Holiday meets The Prince and the Pauper with a Victorian Twist

July 25, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

THE HEIRESS SWAP

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

The Holiday meets The Prince and the Pauper with a Victorian twist in this laugh-out-loud and sexy first in a new series from award- winning author Maddison Michaels.

Evie Jenkins didn’t know what she was thinking by agreeing to switch places with her American heiress cousin. After all, she’s naught but a poor―and usually quite sensible ―companion. All she has to do is spend six weeks among London society, pretending to be an heiress…and ensure that absolutely under no circumstances does she accept any proposals of marriage. Easy right? Wrong!. Especially when Alexander Trenton, the Duke of Hargraves is convinced she’s a title hunting Dollar Princess and is determined to expose her…

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I write Victorian era romances and as I wanted to write about a wealthy American Dollar Princess who trades places with her poor cousin it had to be sometime between the late 1860 up to the earl 1900s when the Dollar Princesses invaded British Society! So I chose to set my book in London amongst the glittering backdrop of the English Aristocracy in 1890, at the height of the Dollar Princesses influence.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely! Evie loves fossils and History (one of my FAV topics) –she loves learning about those subjects and is highly intelligent and has a very curious mind – it would be so much fun to hang out with her in real life!

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Stubborn, fiercely loyal (let’s pretend that’s one word ok, lol) and trustworthy

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned so much about Dollar Princesses and the gilded Age while writing this book – for example did you know that there were over 100 marriages between American Dollar Princesses and British peers, with the heiresses collectively brining over $200 million (approx. $5 billion today) to their marriages!!

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Both really – I tend to go back over what I wrote the day prior before I start writing for the day, and then there’s several rounds of edits with my editor after the book is submitted and before publication.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Croissants and hot cross buns… my two fav treats!!

9–Describe your writing space/office!

OMG I love my writing office – I’ve got every gadget you can imagine (I’m a self-confessed gadget girl) – so you name it I have it, lol. A sit/stand desk, a top-quality microphone with a boom arm setup, walking treadmill under my desk, an under desk bike, a rebounder (got to keep the blood flowing from sitting most of the day), a massage chair, an aromatherapy infuser, a glorious French provincial style bookcase with a ladder (my dream bookcase, though I could probably do with another two more, lol), a massive whiteboard for brainstorming, and the list goes on…  I love my writing space!!

10–Who is an author you admire?

I admire Jayne Ann Krentz – and I especially love her books writing as Amanda Quick – which inspired me as a teenager to write romances! I also think she has such a wonderful work ethic, constantly putting out several titles each and every year.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

When I was 11 years old my dad gave me my first grown up book non-fiction book ‘The Magic of Thinking Big’ and this book really inspired me to go out and achieve my dreams!

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

With this new series and my latest release I was actually approached by my publisher to come up with a concept for a mass market paperback series – and I was having a brainstorming session with my editor when I mentioned this idea I had about two cousins switching places – one an heiress and one her poor companion – well my publisher loved the concept so much that it wasn’t long before a contract was drawn for a 3 book deal!

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I actually really enjoy Young Adult and thrillers/suspense.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

That’s a hard one because I have a few but the top ones are, the Shawshank Redemption, Back to the Future, The Avengers movies, Hunger games… and the list could go on… lol

15–What is your favorite season?

Summer hands down. I hate the cold and adore being super warm!!

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I always take the day off, and ideally, I would go for a walk on the beach and then have a lovely lunch with my family.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I love the Silo series of books by Hugh Howley and I also recent watched Ted Lasso which was great fun (my fav season was season 1).

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Modern Australian as it blends so many different cultures into all sorts of dishes.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Plan renos on our house lately, lol. But otherwise, I read and watch TV, or go for walks.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m currently writing book 2 in the Dollar Princess Series – which is Aimee’s story!!

The Heiress Swap

Evie Jenkins didn’t know what she was thinking by agreeing to switch places with her American heiress cousin. After all, she’s naught but a poor—and usually quite sensible—companion. All she has to do is spend six weeks among London society, pretending to be an heiress…and ensure that absolutely under no circumstances does she accept any proposals of marriage.

When his cousin declares himself in love with a new woman visiting from the States, Alexander Trenton—the sixth Duke of Hargrave—is determined to prove that the young lady in question is just another American “Dollar Princess” desperate for an English title. She seems innocent enough, but Alex is determined to expose her…by thoroughly seducing the lovely and fiercely intelligent heiress himself.

What he assumed would be just one simple kiss erupts into something wild, uncontrollable, and much too public. Now the duke must save her reputation with a betrothal…little knowing that his charming Princess harbors a secret that would certainly ruin them both.
