Mario Escobar | The Power of Motherhood is Capable of Defeating the Darkest Evil

April 19, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

In English, The Teacher of Warsaw, and in Spanish, Lost Lives.

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A novel about how the power of motherhood is capable of defeating the darkest evil.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I traveled there about twelve years before, invited to France by an organization. I always wanted to write the story of Elna’s Maternity and thirteen years later I have succeeded.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Without a doubt, she was a brave, interesting, and determined woman.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Sacrifice, truth, and fight.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That a single person can do a lot to improve this world.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I wait to finish the entire book. If not, at the end I rewrite and I don’t move forward.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

A good barbecue, but also a burger with the family on Fridays while we watch a movie.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

My wife calls it “the cave”. It’s a cramped study filled to the ceiling with books and in which I feel both happy and overwhelmed at the same time.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Stephen King, León Tolstoi, Arturo Pérez Reverte.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Three: How to Write and Publish by Silvia Kohan, Memoirs of Hadrian by Margarit Yourcenar, and the Bible.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I was alone with my daughter while my wife and mother-in-law were shopping for Christmas presents, and my first publisher called me and told me that the book was published. My daughter started crying like crazy and I screamed with joy.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I really like biographies, history books and crime novels.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Casablanca

15–What is your favorite season?

Spring even though I’m allergic to pollen.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With my family and friends, I don’t care about the rest.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

The film would be 1917, and a good book would be Revolution by Arturo Pérez Reverte.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

A roast.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I walk in the countryside, read, go to the movies, or talk with friends.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

A story that transforms their lives, because there is nothing better than reading something that makes you a better person than you were before.

THE SWISS NURSE by Mario Escobar

The Swiss Nurse

Based on the true story of an astonishingly brave woman who saved hundreds of mothers and their children during the Spanish Civil War and World War II.

Elisabeth Eidenbenz left Switzerland in 1937 to aid children orphaned during the Spanish Civil War. Now, her work has led her to France, where she’s determined to provide expectant mothers and their unborn children a refuge amid one of the worst humanitarian crises of the twentieth century.

Desperate to escape the invasion of Franco’s Fascist troops, Isabel Dueñas becomes one of many Spanish patriots fleeing their country. She leaves behind her husband as he fights for democracy, and she seeks asylum in a refugee camp across the border in France. Without adequate shelter, clean drinking water, or medical care, Isabel’s future looks bleak—until she meets Elisabeth.

When Germany invades Poland, a new avalanche of humanity enters France. And soon, fate binds Elisabeth and Isabel together in the most important work of their lives.

Based on the true stories of refugees and the woman who risked everything to save them, The Swiss Nurse shares a message of love and strength amid one of the darkest moments in history.
