May Cobb | A Woman Investigates Her Mother’s Death

July 10, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

A LIKEABLE WOMAN

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Kira, a 30-something woman who fled her small, East Texas hometown decades earlier in the wake of her provocative mother’s mysterious death returns to attend her frenemy’s vow renewal party and as she investigates her mother’s death, danger starts to lurk all around her.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

All my thrillers (so far) are set in the lush, eerie Piney Woods of Deep East Texas, a place at once both haunting and beautiful.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

I would totally hang out with Kira and we would have so much in common!

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Artistic, Shrewd, Frozen by grief

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I challenged myself to write a closed-circle mystery—something I’d never done!—and had great fun doing it!

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I do edit as I draft and I work with a developmental editor during the drafting process.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Dark chocolate, all day and all night!

9–Describe your writing space/office!

A corner of my bedroom by my favorite window in the house that looks over our backyard. I used to have my own office, but I find it’s too much pressure, so I prefer writing in this small space.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Riley Sager! I love all of his books and I find it truly astonishing that he gets better with every single book.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Luis Alberto Urrea’s THE HUMMINGBIRD’S DAUGHTER. Reading that book was like being in a dream that I never wanted to wake up from.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

“The Call” for me came on a Monday morning in the spring of 2019 when my stalwart agent, Victoria Sanders, called to tell me that she was taking my thriller, THE HUNTING WIVES, to auction.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Thrillers!

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Tough to pick just one! But I do love 9 to 5.

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Usually a meal with my husband and family

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I flipped my lid for Eliza Jane Brazier’s GIRLS AND THEIR HORSES! It’s like Big Little Lies meets Dallas meets Mean Girls.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Tex Mex

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Nap!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I just finished my next thriller, which is my first novel set outside of East Texas. It’s set in Hollywood and I’m describing it as Rear Window meets The Spare Room.
