Sherry Harris | 20 Questions: THREE SHOTS TO THE WIND

April 4, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

THREE SHOTS TO THE WIND

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Chloe Jackson has a secret admirer. She’s pouring drinks at the Sea Glass Saloon when an airplane flies over the beach with a banner reading I LOVE YOU CHLOE JACKSON. Then a bouquet of lilacs – her favorite flower – is delivered to the bar, followed by an expensive bottle of her favorite sparkling wine. Chloe’s ex-fiancé from Chicago has flown down to Florida for an accountants’ convention. Unfortunately, he’s not in a hotel conference room, he’s floating in the lake next to Chloe’s house, clutching a photo of her. Who murders an accountant on a business trip? When her boyfriend becomes the prime suspect, Chloe is determined to find the murderer. But if she isn’t careful, it may be closing time and lights out for her . . .

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

My editor originally suggested setting the series in Key West. I’d only been there once but used to live in the Florida panhandle which is called Lower Alabama, the Emerald Coast, and the Redneck Riviera – an imagine they are working hard to shed. The area has interesting dynamics including natives versus tourists, developers who continue to change small towns to swaths of high rises, wealthy versus working class people—all things that add volatility to a story.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely! Although, I’d wait at the Sea Glass with a tropical drink while Chloe was out for a run. Chloe was a former children’s librarian who has an adventurous side and a past she’s trying to overcome.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Resourceful, smart, compassionate

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I did a lot of sprints (writing for twenty-five minutes without stopping or taking your fingers off the keyboard) writing this book and somehow it seemed to come out funnier.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A little of both but I do most of my editing when I’m done with the first draft. I usually reread what I wrote the day before and might smooth a sentence as I go along.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Pizza!

9–Describe your writing space/office!

It’s on the second story of our house. One window looks out at a patch of woods and the other at my neighbor’s house. My desk is angled to look at the woods. I have favorite art hanging on the walls, the target from the one time I went to a gun range (it looks like I killed Hulk Hogan), a bulletin board filled with favorite photos and cards, plus shelves filled to overflowing with books.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Kellye Garrett – she’s not only a brilliant author, she’s an advocate for the writing community through her work with Sisters in Crime and as a founder of Crime Writers of Color.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

The Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace that I read as a child. They made me want to be a writer like Betsy.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

After years of trying to get published it was pure joy. Some screaming and awkward happy dancing may have taken place.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Action thrillers followed by mysteries.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Oof, just one? Billy Elliott was the first thing that popped into my head.

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Quietly without a lot of fuss.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Like A Sister by Kellye Garrett and Reacher for a tv show.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I love to read, take walks, and visit wineries.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

RUM AND CHOKED, the fourth Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon mystery, comes out January 23, 2023.

A Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon Mystery #3

Three Shots to the Wind

Chloe’s Windy City ex-fiancé gets blown away in the Florida panhandle . . .

DEAD EXES TELL NO TALES

Saloon owner Chloe Jackson appears to have a secret admirer. She’s pouring drinks at the Sea Glass Saloon in Emerald Cove when an airplane flies by above the beach with a banner reading I LOVE YOU CHLOE JACKSON. She immediately rules out Rip Barnett. They are in the early stages of dating and no one has said the L word. Then a bouquet of lilacs—her favorite flower—is delivered to the bar, followed by an expensive bottle of her favorite sparkling wine. It couldn’t be . . .

Sure enough, her ex-fiancé from Chicago has flown down to Florida for an accountants’ convention. But is he trying to mix business with pleasure and win her back? Unfortunately he’s not in a hotel conference room, he’s floating facedown in the lake next to her house, clutching a photo of Chloe. Who murders an accountant on a business trip—it just doesn’t add up. When Rip becomes the prime suspect, Chloe is determined to find the secret murderer. But if she isn’t careful, it may be closing time and lights out for her . . .
