Stefanie London | A Second Chance at Love with the World’s Worst Matchmaker

August 4, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

CONFESSIONS OF A CANINE DRAMA QUEEN

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Two people get a second chance at love with the world’s worst matchmaker—a dramatic Husky named Molly.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The whole series is set in New York, but for the third book I needed to have the characters thrown together in a space where they couldn’t escape each other… enter a dog talent competition at an adult camping retreat!

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Absolutely. August is totally the kind of woman I love to have as a friend. She’s independent, forthright, ambitious, and kind. She’s the kind of friend who will tell you the truth even if it’s hard and be there with tissues and ice cream to help you get through it.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Ambitious, Independent, Strong.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That dog grooming can be a really tough job! I watched a ton of dog grooming videos to understand the process and considerations for the scenes where August is on set at the photoshoot as well as the scene with the home grooming client. For anyone who loves animals I highly recommend The Girl with The Dogs YouTube channel, it’s a funny and educational grooming channel.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A bit of both. I often start my writing session by reading the last scene I wrote to fully get into the headspace of the story and I often do tweak things while I’m re-reading that section, like layering in more descriptions, tightening sentences or chopping anything that feels extraneous. But I usually leave the larger scale changes for after drafting is complete.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I’m a sucker for freshly baked pastries.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I live in a small city apartment with my husband, and he has the office, so I have a desk in our main room with a big, beautiful window right next to me that looks all the way out to Lake Ontario.

10–Who is an author you admire?

There are so many! For romance, I have always adored Roni Loren’s books. Nobody writes complex 3d characters like she does.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I was working in the banking industry in a situation I’ve often described as “The Devil Wears Prada but without the good clothes.” I had been on submission with Harlequin for three rounds of revisions over eight months, but eventually after having the day from hell at work I saw a tweet from the editor who had my book saying she was going to make some “special calls” that day.

I literally I stared at my phone… and it started ringing with a UK number. That’s how I got my first two-book contract, and I cried when I got off the phone, so my husband immediately dragged me out to a bar with our friends to get champagnes to celebrate.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Mystery

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Snatch

15–What is your favorite season?

Autumn/Fall

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Dinner with friends at a cool restaurant

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Only Murders in the Building

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I love knitting, baking, playing Magic: The Gathering and listening to podcasts.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m hard at work on a cozy mystery series under my Emily George pen name that I am absolutely loving! It has all the shenanigans and funny moments of my romantic comedies, but with a murder thrown in. A Half-Baked Murder is out now, and A High-Tide Murder comes out in early 2024.

Confessions of a Canine Drama Queen

Can you ever really forget the one who got away?

August Merriweather has always been good with animals. In fact, she’s known as Manhattan’s Dog Whisperer. Men, on the other hand? Not so much. She’s been falling for the wrong guys ever since her regrettable crush on Keaton Sax, older brother of her best friend, Leah, and the biggest jerkface this side of the Hudson.

Now an emotionally closed off widower, Keaton has become one of the most formidable men on Wall Street, but August knows his secret. He’s not driven by sales targets and bonus checks—Keaton just wants to give his family the security they never had. So when Leah asks Keaton to wrangle her over-the-top, dramatic husky at a weekend talent competition, Keaton says yes…and begs August to help him win the event for Leah.

Between obstacle courses, Molly’s husky temper tantrums and a cabin with just one bed, August is having a blast. Away from the pressure to have a “perfect life” with the “right guy,” she finds herself relaxing and getting to see the softer side of the man she once loved. Is this just a temporary truce? Or could Keaton finally be the right guy at the right time?
