Valerie Tejeda | 20 Questions: GOOD ON PAPER

July 15, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

GOOD ON PAPER

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

GOOD ON PAPER follows a struggling journalist who is desperate to save her career. So much so, that she signs up to do a web series chronicling her wedding to her Internet famous fiancé in Cancún. The problem? The shows videographer is her former childhood best friend and the one who broke her heart.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Part of the book takes place in the LA area (which is where I am originally from) and the second half takes place in Cancún, Mexico. Since I have Mexican heritage on my dad’s side, and Cancún would be a beautiful place for a televised wedding scenario, the second part of the book felt like a good fit there!

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Yes! I’d love to have coffee with Jazmine, especially since our favorite coffee drinks are so similar.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Ambitious. Old school. Stubborn.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Writing these characters was such a great reminder that life can sometimes be messy and confusing but that is just part of the process. It is never too late to start a new and focus on your own happiness first and foremost!

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I like to wait till I’m done.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I have a couple! Fries, quesadillas with guacamole, and good iced coffee with a pastry.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

It’s full of crystals, tarot cards, and lots of iced coffees lol and there’s usually ambient nature sounds (rain, birds, waves, etc.) playing in the background.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Danielle Paige! She is so kind, sweet, and genuine (even after all her success) and she writes really fun books!!

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

I think that almost every book adds to your life a bit in one way or another so I wouldn’t be able to choose one!

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

It started with a text from my agent asking me if I was available for a quick call. When she said we had an offer from Headline/Hachette for Good on Paper it was unexpected because it had been on sub for a couple months. This book was a bit outside of the rom-com box, so I truly never thought it was going to get published! So when I got the call saying that we had an offer I was definitely surprised! I literally said, “Are you sure?” Haha – Still can’t believe it’s out in the world!

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Contemporary romance

14–What’s your favorite movie?

I have a handful but at the moment I’ve been coming back to Interstellar and When Harry Met Sally

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With just a few people and lots of cupcakes

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I just recently got on the Bridgerton on Netflix bandwagon (I know I’m late to the party) but I definitely think that’s a great one to binge-watch!

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Mexican

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I really love to read when I have free time!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’ll be announcing a new book soon and I’m so excited to share the news!

GOOD ON PAPER by Valerie Tejeda

Good on Paper

Is the universe telling her to follow her heart?

Journalist Jazmine Prado has always believed that timing is everything. So when her magazine reveals plans to lay off writers as they pivot to video content, she’ll do whatever it takes to stay on the pay roll. Like agree to take part in the magazine’s first web series, Our Big Day, chronicling her Cancún wedding to her gorgeous, internet-famous fiancé, Hudson Taylor. It’s not the way fiercely private Jaz envisioned getting married. But at least she’ll keep her job . . . right?

What Jaz could not have foretold is that she’d know the show’s videographer – intimately. Leonardo Couture is her former best friend and first love who she hasn’t seen, or spoken to, for seven years.

With her career hanging by a thread, and the boy who broke her heart filming her wedding to another, is now the best time to question everything? But as the show takes over, Jaz has to ask herself what and who she really wants for her life. Maybe it’s time to listen to the universe . . .
