Kelsey Kicklighter Interview – Fairy Tales and the Fae
Author Guest , Interviews / May 12, 2022

Faye, your female protagonist, is half-faerie. As a writer, what is your fascination with all things fae? (I ask as somebody who is more interested in vampires and werewolves). Honestly, my obsession with the fae started when I was about four or five…with the movie Thumbelina. I know I burnt through at least one of those VHS tapes. But it wasn’t enough. I started searching for books on faerie tales–I was very much a library kid. I got hooked on the old school stuff, especially The Six Swans, East o’ the Sun, West o’ the Moon, and The Ballad of Tamlin. I liked that the fae weren’t really heroes or villains, but somehow both. And that to survive them you had to be very, very clever. But I’m also a fan of vampires and werewolves! Anything mythological or lore based, I’m usually 100% in.   How would you describe Faye? Faye is first and foremost, a protector. That’s who she is at her core. She has a good head on her shoulders but has a tendency to make rash decisions when the fate of those she loves is hanging in the balance. She tends to shield herself with sarcasm and…

Jenn Burke | 20 Questions: OUT OF THE ASHES
Author Guest / May 12, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? OUT OF THE ASHES. It’s the third book in the Ashes & Dust trilogy.   2–What is it about? It’s the culmination of the story that started in book 1, when someone was threatening to expose the existence of Toronto’s paranormal community. Evan, a vampire PI who deals with chronic depression, and Colin, a creature known as a phoenix who can control fire and magical energy, thought they found out who was behind everything in book 2, but this one throws a few curveballs their way. They’ve got to work with former enemies to truly solve the mystery – but first, they have to deal with the repercussion of Colin’s decision at the end of book 2 to dissolve their forced bond against Evan’s wishes. There are lots of up and downs in this one, but a very firm happily ever after!   3–What do you love about the setting of your book?  Toronto is such a great mix of diverse settings. You’ve got the old-fashioned, touristy promenade of the Distillery District, industrial areas that make for great locations for out-of-sight paranormal shenanigans, and lakefront beaches for quiet moments. In this book,…

Elizabeth Heiter | Sniffing Out Danger
Author Guest / May 11, 2022

When an out-of-town captain and a rookie K-9 handler team up to stop a bomber, the results are explosive…   I adore writing romantic suspense with lovable, courageous K-9s in the mix. My K-9 Alaska series has featured a Combat Tracker dog who had to retire early from the military, a therapy rescue dog, a Victim Specialist K-9 with the FBI, and a dual-purpose police K-9. I enjoyed writing those K-9s so much that I’m working on two more stories in that series, featuring a narcotics detection K-9 with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation and a search and rescue K-9 who does work with the FBI. But before those books release (sometime next year), I paused to be part of the K-9s on Patrol multi-author series. While all of my K-9 Alaska series heroes and heroines are big animal lovers, Ava Callan from SNIFFING OUT DANGER has no experience with dogs and never wanted to work with a K-9. She sees being paired with a K-9 instead of a human as a punishment for being the newbie who doesn’t fit in when she moves from Chicago to what feels to her like middle-of-nowhere Jasper, Idaho. But as soon as she…

Jennifer Vido | Jen’s Jewels Interview: SUMMER AT THE CAPE by RaeAnne Thayne
Author Guest , Interviews , Jen's Jewels / May 11, 2022

Jennifer Vido: What inspired you to write SUMMER AT THE CAPE? RaeAnne Thayne: I have been fascinated for a long time by the unique relationship between twins. I was interested in exploring what happens to one twin when their “womb-mate” dies. Factor in another older sister who was not part of that twin relationship and I wondered how the dynamics of a family would change with the death of one of the twins. A big subplot of this book involves glamping, something that definitely appeals to me. I love the outdoors and camping, escaping the hectic pace of life in the outdoors, but I must admit I’m of a certain age where I also enjoy my creature comforts. LOL. Glamping seems like a way to have the best of both worlds.   Jen: The novel is set in the fictional town of Cape Sanctuary. From where did you draw inspiration to create this welcoming place? RaeAnne: I live in the mountains of Northern Utah, far from the ocean, but when my family vacations, we tend to head to the coast. Two of our favorite places are Cannon Beach, OR and the Monterey/Carmel-by-the-Sea areas of Central California. When I was trying…

Laney Hatcher | 20 Questions: NEANDERTHAL SEEKS DUCHESS
Author Guest / May 11, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? My debut novel and Smartypants Romance title is called NEANDERTHAL SEEKS DUCHESS. It’s a historical romance re-imagining of Penny Reid’s Knitting in the City series, written in Smartypants Romance’s new Out of this World imprint. 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Quirky wallflower tries to avoid scandal in London but meets a mysterious gentleman who shakes things up instead. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? London felt like the obvious choice, so I went with it. 4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life? Definitely. Jane is a loyal and dedicated friend whose quirks and unique personality make her someone I’d love to hang with. 5–What are three words that describe your hero? Unconventional, brooding, swoony 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I really wanted to accurately display and translate the friendships between the Knitting in the City ladies (Penny’s series) to the London embroidery ladies (my series). And I think what hit home while I was writing NSD was that whether you’re in modern day Chicago or 19th century England, true and lasting friendships are rare and precious. 7–Do…

Evie Hawtrey | 20 Questions: AND BY FIRE
Author Guest / May 10, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? AND BY FIRE 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Tempered by fire and separated by centuries, two extraordinary female detectives track a pair of murderous geniuses who will burn the world for their art in this mystery that is perfect for fans of Sarah Penner and Dan Brown. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? London was a foregone conclusion because my historical timeline in And by Fire involves that city’s Great Fire of 1666. And I knew I was going to pair that storyline with a modern one opening with the discovery of a charred figure at the base of Sir Christopher Wren’s monument to the Great Fire. The location of Wren’s monument assured that my modern-day main character, Nigella Parker, would be a Detective Inspector with the London City Police, rather than the Met (aka Scotland Yard). The jurisdiction of the City police is approximately 1.12 square miles (a miniscule portion of the whopping 607 square miles comprising greater London), which makes my modern serial arson/murder investigation multi-jurisdictional—enter Nigella’s former lover and partner-in-crime-fighting DI Colm O’Leary from Scotland Yard. 4–Would you hang out…

My Favorite YA Books by Carley Fortune
Author Spotlight / May 10, 2022

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley This is one of the most gorgeous books about grief and young love I’ve read. Actually, it’s one of the most gorgeous books I’ve read, full stop. Following the drowning death of her brother, Rachel returns to the city where she grew up and to her one-time friend and crush, Henry. Rachel hasn’t been back in three years and before she left, she wrote Henry a love letter — he didn’t respond. Now the two are working together at his family’s struggling bookstore. The novel is unsurprisingly the recipient of many awards, including Australia’s Prime Minister’s Literary Award.   The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han Jenny Han is best known for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, which, fair. But I loved this novel (the first in Han’s Summer series) about teenage Belly, who spends her summers at a beach house in North Carolina with brothers Conrad and Jeremiah. The book captures all the confusion and excitement of adolescent crushes and friendships, but it’s also about the importance of the family we make for ourselves. It’s currently being adapted into a TV series.   Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon It’s so…

Helena Hunting | 20 Questions: STARRY-EYED LOVE
Author Guest / May 10, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? STARRY-EYED LOVE   2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?  Having just gotten out of a relationship, London turns down a date with an attractive man, only to have him crash a business meeting of hers three months later. Turns out he’s the CEO of the company and now she’s locked into working with him.   3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?  Back in 2018 I attended Book Bonanza in Colorado and fell in love with the mountains and the scenery and knew I wanted to set a series there. It’s such a beautiful location and became the perfect setting for Spark House, the event hotel run by the Spark sisters.   4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?  Definitely! She’s fun and crafty and endearing. I would totally hang out with her and make origami stars, or design centerpieces with her, which are some of the things she does for her own side business, and for Spark House.   5–What are three words that describe your hero? Charismatic, intense, giving.   6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?  I learned…
