Angela Carlise | Corina Roberts Turns to Her Ex for Help Finding Answers

May 6, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release?

SECONDARY TARGET

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Corina Roberts wants nothing more than to be left alone with her small business and her dog, but when someone attacks her and then her father goes missing, she reluctantly turns to her ex-boyfriend, army veteran Bryce Jessup, to help her find answers. But their search uncovers secrets her father should never have kept hidden—like the fact they’ve been hiding from a mastermind murderer since she was thirteen. A murderer who has finally found them.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I live in a rural area of northern Kentucky where the county seat has a nostalgic small-town feel. Although I chose to fictionalize it and change the name, the area seemed ideal for a family looking for a safe, out-of-the-way place to disappear to.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Gladly. Although she’s operating in extenuating circumstances during the book, Corina is normally an easy-going person you could enjoy grabbing a cup of coffee with or just meeting to hang out and read together.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Independent, kind, driven

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That despite outward appearances, the author isn’t totally in charge. I mean, technically speaking, yes, I am making the decisions (I do know that my characters aren’t real . . . sort of). But once the characters and story take on a life of their own, sometimes what I didn’t intend to take place (and perhaps don’t even want to take place) HAS TO HAPPEN because the story wouldn’t be quite right otherwise. At those points, I might agonize over the situation for a while, but eventually I end up giving in, and the story is better for it.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I totally edit as I go. My internal editor doesn’t have an off button.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I am an avid tea drinker, and my first job was in a British-style tea room, so I love a good afternoon tea whether I’m hosting in my own home or trying out a local establishment when traveling.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

My official writing space is a bright, airy room that we remodeled in our garage a couple years ago. Whether there or when I’m working at the house, you can usually find me curled in a recliner with a pot of hot tea at my side.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Lynn H. Blackburn. Although we haven’t officially met in person, we connected online a couple years ago, and she’s been such an encouragement to me—from the contents of her books, to the snippets of life and family she shares on social media, to cheering me on in my writing endeavors and even becoming an endorser for Secondary Target.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Oh, I’d say many books have changed my life. I’ve been a reader (or listener) for as long as I can remember, and those many stories have become a part of me. If I had to choose one novel right now, I suppose I’d go with Terri Blackstock’s Last Light because it got me hooked on the suspense genre, which indirectly led to my writing romantic suspense today.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I had just gotten off work and was on my way to my car when my agent called to tell me Bethany House was offering a contract. Of course, she began with “Are you sitting down?” and I was like, “No, I’m walking, but give me a minute and I will be!” She’s always been so encouraging and was overjoyed to share the news that they wanted not just my first book, but a three-book series. Obviously, I was overjoyed as well. I’m not a squealer, but I may have squealed a bit once we finished the call. As is my custom, I went home and celebrated with a cup of Darjeeling—oh, and family, of course.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romantic suspense

14–What’s your favorite movie?

You Can’t Take It With You. I adore the zany cast of characters who genuinely love and accept each other for who they are.

15–What is your favorite season?

Autumn. I absolutely love the crispness to the air, the colors of the leaves, and the coziness of pulling on a sweater again.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

By spending time with the people I love—whether that’s at a special dinner with friends/family or at my workplace with my awesome coworkers.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I love Hallmarks’ Signed, Sealed, Delivered series. We “postables” just received official word that new movies are being made, and we are thrilled!

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Sushi—I could eat it for any meal and in any mood.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I love to binge entire books at a sitting, experiment in the kitchen, and expand my herb garden.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m working on the second book in The Secrets of Kincaid, which will feature Bryce’s sister, Allye, and Eric Thornton of the Kincaid police department. So far, they’re both still alive.
