Rachel Koller Croft | London disco vampires!

August 19, 2024

1–What is the title of your latest release?

WE LOVE THE NIGHTLIFE

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

London disco vampires! (But the core of the story is about a friendship between two women that goes completely off the rails…they just happen to be vampires that open a nightclub together.)

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I’ve spent a lot of extended time in London (my husband is half-English) and it’s my favorite city in the world. Plus, I thought it would add more color and depth to the historical and vampirical elements of the story.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Yes. I love party girls.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Amber Wells is…fun-loving, tempestuous and sly.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Knowing your characters backward and forward is essential for figuring out big plot problems. Time crafting their personalities and back stories and hopes and dreams is never wasted. It always comes back around in some way when drafting.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I try not to edit as I draft, but sometimes I can’t help it.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

A warm chocolate chip cookie.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I am so lucky that I have an office of my very own since December and it is full of all my favorite things. I have pictures of my heroes (Judy Blume and Michael Jordan), I have my book covers framed on the wall, I have lots of weird art and spooky sculptures everywhere. And these lacy black Goth curtains I’m obsessed with – it’s The Secret Garden meets Beetlejuice room of my dreams.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Judy Blume. She is incredible. Watch her documentary (and read her books, too, of course).

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

This is going to sound VERY woo-woo and LA, but I went to an energy retreat, and they did exercises from The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and I was going through a hard time (break-up, corporate job loss, etc.) and it made me realize I wanted to spend my life being a writer. I put everything I had into it and I sold my first script a few months later to Sony.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

We Love the Nightlife was the second book in my first-ever deal so I always knew it was coming – BUT when I pitched the initial idea to my editor on Zoom while I was in London, I kind of couldn’t believe I was going to write a vampire novel. It felt a little insane!

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I like family sagas, thrillers with villains I love, and good old-fashioned horror.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

I have so many. Recent favorites are Poor Things and Challengers. Classic faves are All That Jazz and Jaws. I suppose I love Roy Scheider.

15–What is your favorite season?

I love the fall. Spooky season forever.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Going wine tasting with my husband.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

For TV, I loved Mr. and Mrs. Smith on Amazon. A movie I loved is Thelma with June Squibb. It’s perfect. Books I just inhaled Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra and The Whispers by Ashley Audrain. And I cannot get enough of Julia Louis Dreyfus’ podcast Wiser Than Me.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

French or Mediterranean.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Travel, read, and of course, go dancing.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Keeping that close to my chest, but it’s gonna be good!
