Abigail Owen | Lyra finds herself stuck in literal hell—Tartarus

October 23, 2025

What is the title of your latest release?
THE THINGS GODS BREAK

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
After winning the Crucible and Hades’s heart, Lyra finds herself stuck in literal hell—Tartarus. In a race against time and monsters, she must find her way out and back to Hades.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
LOL. A bit of a spoiler alert for those who haven’t read book 1… the cliffhanger is a bit of a doozy. It also determined where book 2 would pick up.

Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Absolutely. Lyra is one of my favorite heroines to write. She may say everything she’s thinking, even when she shouldn’t. But she’s honest, funny, loyal, and, to me at least, always interesting.

What are three words that describe your hero?
on the edge

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
That writing any kind of time element is…really hard. Really, really fun, but dang that was hard.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I edit as I go, take notes on the bigger changes, and then do another few passes after I’m done. Edits are my favorite part.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I have a cup of tea, English style—hot with sugar and cream—every single morning. I will never give it up.

Describe your writing space/office!
We converted what is supposed to be a formal living room into my office and I love it because it has lots of space for all my bookshelves, a standing desk, a comfy chair, and storage. I love my space!

Who is an author you admire?
So very many authors I admire. But someone at the top of my list is Cathy Maxwell. In addition to being a phenomenal author, Cathy is one of those people who is so generous with her time and her energy, is kind and welcoming to everyone she meets, loves to spotlight other authors and help give back to upcoming authors entering the romance genre, and loves to learn and try new things. She is amazing!

Is there a book that changed your life?
There are so many! But for me, the most impactful was Twilight. I had read romance separately from scifi/fantasy for years. But it wasn’t until Twilight that I learned those two incredible genres could be combined. After trying and failing to write and finish a book for years, I sat down and finished my first book ever in six weeks—a fantasy romance.

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
My career has been a slow and steady experience of steps—yes with setbacks like everyone has, but also with a lot of amazing personal firsts. Personally, I have always chosen to focus on and celebrate the firsts. I first finished a book at all in 2008 (after about 30 failed attempts). I first indie published in 2012 (and total strangers liked my book). I first placed in a writing contest with one of my books in 2013. I first traditionally published with The Wild Rose Press in 2014. I finished my first completed series in 2014. I first contracted with Entangled, my primary publisher, in 2017 (not knowing the huge impact they would have on me as a writer). I first signed with my agent in 2018 (leading to a whole bunch more firsts). I first had a published book in bookstores in 2019. I first had a book translated and published internationally in 2020. I first had a hardcover book in 2022. I first hit the bestseller lists in 2024. And a thousand other firsts in between.

For me, every single first was and is worth celebration. But especially, on a personal level, they were the moments that encouraged me to keep going despite the many setbacks (small and large) in between, to keep writing, keep trying. They were needed reminders of how much I love what I do, and how lucky I am to get to do it!

What’s your favorite genre to read?
romance and fantasy are pretty well tied

What’s your favorite movie?
Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode 4)

What is your favorite season?
spring

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
a day to rest and a lot of chocolate and family

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I just finished watching season 1 of Landman. I love pretty much anything Taylor Sheridan touches.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I love food in general, so there’s not a particular favorite. Unless you count dessert as a type of cuisine. Then…dessert.

What do you do when you have free time?
Free time is rare for me, and I honestly don’t know what to do with it when I get it. I prefer to be busy. But when I do get it… I read. I sleep. I do puzzles. I reorganize the house.

What can readers expect from you next?
Next, I have the third and final book in the Crucible trilogy coming up. Then I have two new books, each the first book in new series that I can’t quite share details about yet! Stay tuned!

This breathtaking collectible is only available on a limited first print run in the U.S. and Canada only, a must-have for any book lover.

The gods want her dead…Hades will bury them.

You’d think I’d have learned by now:

Don’t mouth off to deities.

Don’t fall for the King of the Underworld.

And definitely don’t get dragged into a divine death match where I’m the cursed mortal prize.

But here I am—trapped in Tartarus, humanity’s worst pit stop, squaring off against monsters who make the gods look merciful. Titans, twisted by centuries of rage and ruin, are sealed behind seven ancient locks.

And guess what?

I’m the key.

To escape, I’ll have to survive every horrifying trial they throw at me.

To win, I might have to become something the gods never saw coming.

Oh, and Hades?

He’s about to break every rule the gods ever wrote.

Because to save me…the god of death will burn the world.

But if I break free? So do the Titans.

And the world won’t just suffer—it’ll beg for the end.

About Abigail Owen

Abigail Owen

Multi-award-winning author, Abigail Owen, writes adult paranormal romance & upper YA/new adult fantasy romance. She loves plots that move hot and fast, feisty heroines with sass, heroes with heart, a dash of snark, and oodles of HEAs! Other titles include wife, mother, Star Wars geek, ex-competitive skydiver, spreadsheet lover, eMBA, organizational guru, Texan, Aggie, and chocoholic.

Abigail attempted to find a practical career related to her favorite pastime by earning a degree in English Rhetoric (Technical Writing) and an MBA. However, she swiftly discovered that writing without imagination is not nearly as fun as writing with it.

Abigail currently resides in Austin, Texas, with her own swoon-worthy hero, their (mostly) angelic kids, who are growing up way too fast, and two adorable fur babies.
