Georgia Stone | Traveling leads to an unexpected romance

What is the title of your latest release?
THE ROOMMATE RULE

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
A travel influencer’s plus-one drops out of a six-week trip to Wales at the last minute, so a friend of his sister’s takes their place. They set some ground rules and find that some they’re much better at following than others.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I knew I wanted to keep it in the UK, but somewhere completely different from London, which was where my first book was set. I toyed with a few ideas but in the end, I settled on the coast of Wales. I’ve been to Pembrokeshire before and it’s so beautiful, and Wales as a whole deserves more love in my opinion, so Pembrokeshire it was!

Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Yes, and she’d probably enjoy some peace and quiet (much like I do!).

What are three words that describe your hero?
Reckless, flirtatious, self-assured.

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
That I can write heroines who are the complete opposite to me. It was something I was nervous about, and it took me a few drafts to really pin Dylan down, but I’ve ended up with a character I really love, and one who seems to resonate with lots of people.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I may edit a paragraph here and there while I’m drafting, but generally I wait until I’m totally done.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I would eat cinnamon buns every day if I could.

Describe your writing space/office!
My dream is to have a separate office someday, but for now I write at my dining table (which I hardly ever eat at, so really it’s just my desk at this point). Usually you can find a stack of craft books, at least two drinks, and tons of notebooks, Post-its and random sheets of paper with scribbled notes on them. Most importantly, I also have an extra-wide swivel chair, because I like to sit cross-legged and spin.

Who is an author you admire?
I think V.E. Schwab has the coolest ideas, all the time. I wish I could come up with such interesting premises. Romance-wise, I’ve loved watching B.K. Borison’s success, and really admire how she’s in the midst of publishing two separate – but both amazing – series in parallel.

Is there a book that changed your life?
When I was really young, I read a book called FAIRY DUST, which was about, you guessed it, fairies. But it’s also about life and death and remembering those we’ve lost, wrapped up in this cute story about fairies, and it was the first time I recall feeling that bittersweet kind of sadness while reading. Maybe it unknowingly taught me that books with happy endings can have sadness to them too.

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I was actually unemployed at the time, which made it even wilder. In the UK we have a system where the government pays you a small amount of money while you’re looking for work. I had my weekly call with them on that fateful day, and an hour and a half later, while I was making breakfast, my agent’s name popped up on my phone screen, telling me that my now-UK publisher had offered a pre-empt, less than two weeks after going out on sub. I couldn’t sleep at all that night – I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. More than the shock/surprise/disbelief that a Big 5 publisher actually wanted my work, I felt such overwhelming relief knowing I’d have solid income for a while after such a long time without it. The fact it was income from my fiction writing was the biggest dream come true.

What’s your favorite genre to read?
I love contemporary romance and always will.

What’s your favorite movie?
I unironically think Spy Kids 1 and 2 are some of the best films ever made.

What is your favorite season?
It’s a cop-out answer, but I love the transition from summer to autumn, where it’s a little bit of both.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I don’t love feeling the pressure to do something big on my birthday, so my favorite thing is to be on a trip somewhere and wake up a year older in a new place. On my last birthday I was in Portland, Maine, and it was great! This year, I went to see Harry Styles in concert.

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
If you like rom-com films, please watch Rye Lane. It’s a love letter to London and chance encounters and it’s beautifully shot and is just so funny and heartwarming.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I’m the kind of person who will eat anything that’s put in front of them, so I don’t even think I have an answer. I love too many cuisines to have a favorite!

What do you do when you have free time?
Unsurprisingly, I read, but I also love seeing my favourite artists live. One of the advantages of living in London is that we get so many artists touring here, from tiny, sticky-floored basements to huge, pyrotechnic-filled stadiums, and I love all of it.

What can readers expect from you next?
I can’t say what’s happening next exactly (both because it’s a secret, but also because in some ways, I don’t know either!), but I will say that we’re back in London for the book I’m working on right now and I really, really love these characters and cannot wait to share more.

THE ROOMMATE RULE by Georgia Stone

A Novel

When two polar opposites find themselves sharing a cabin for the summer, they lay down some ground rules to keep the peace—only to discover that one of those rules might be impossible to keep in this steamy new novel from the author of The Friendship Fling.

Dylan is the kind of person who is always fifteen minutes early and never leaves things to chance–so she can’t believe she’s about to spend six weeks on a last-minute trip to Wales that she didn’t plan, living in a cabin with a man she’s only met once.

Max always goes with the flow, and after his plus-one drops out of his all-expenses-paid travel influencer trip, he’s happy for his sister’s friend to take the spot. After all, from what he remembers of their brief meeting a year ago, Dylan is the kind of woman he’d be more than happy to spend some alone time with.

Not that anything is going to happen between them, because Dylan knows getting involved with this reckless, irrepressible flirt is the last thing she needs. So she makes a house rule: they are roommates only, and under no circumstances can anything . . . untoward . . . happen between them.

But as the days go by, Max starts to realize how much he enjoys chipping away at the walls Dylan hides herself behind, while Dylan begins to admit to herself that there may be more to Max than she first assumed. And before she knows it, she finds herself wondering if their “roommate rule” might be one rule she actually wants to break…
