What is the title of your latest release?
TWILIGHT TACTICS
What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
When an FBI agent brings a teenage murder witness to a Tennessee veterans’ ranch for safekeeping, a coordinated siege descends on the property. No one can tell whether the attackers are after the girl on the witness list or the survival instructor with the mysterious past.
How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I wanted a setting that could double as a sanctuary and a battleground — somewhere remote enough that help wouldn’t be easy to reach, but with a community of people who already knew how to fight when fighting was needed. Broken Chains Ranch is a trauma recovery facility for veterans tucked into the Tennessee hills in the fictional town of Whitestone.
Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Elena Thompson? Absolutely. I’d let her pick the venue, thought, because she’d choose somewhere with sight lines and an exit. Ha. Seriously, she’s smart, capable, and compassionate. She also carries a past she doesn’t talk about, and I find that intriguing rather than off-putting. I think we’d be friends.
What are three words that describe your hero?
Steady. Protective. Honorable.
What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned just how much of wilderness survival is mental rather than physical. I mean, the technical skills matter, but the real difference between people who make it and people who don’t usually comes down to what’s happening between their ears. That fed beautifully into Elena’s character and, honestly, into the spiritual layer of the book too. So much of faith under pressure is about where you put your mind when everything around you is falling apart.
Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I edit as I draft. I know plenty of writers who can barrel straight through to “The End” and then circle back, but my brain doesn’t work that way. I tend to read back over what I wrote the day before, polish it up, and use that to jump into the new day’s words. By the time I type the last sentence, the manuscript is already pretty clean. Which is helpful, because there’s always another deadline waiting.
What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Well, I do love my foods. Unfortunately. Ha. But if I’m going to indulge, it’ll be with some strawberry ice cream and M&Ms.
Describe your writing space/office!
I love my office space. We moved into a new house this past November and I got a whole room to set up as my workspace. It’s bright thanks to the three big windows and very cozy. I have a 49” inch gaming monitor that allows me to have several documents open at once and that’s been the best purchase ever. There’s a plush rug when you walk in and I always walk on it barefoot because it feels so good on my feet! LOL! And then there are the bookcases. I have lots of bookcases for all the books. Needless to say, I love my office. Which is a good thing because I spend a LOT of time in there.
Who is an author you admire?
Well, it’s really hard to pick just one as I admire so many. But I
Is there a book that changed your life?
I can’t think of a single book (discounting the Bible) that changed my life. I’ve had many books that I’ve loved and thought: I want to write like that.
Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
The call came in February of 2007, from Krista Stroever — an editor at Steeple Hill — and she was calling to tell me they wanted to buy my book LETHAL DECEPTION. I had been writing and submitting for eight years by that point, so when the phone rang and she said the words, I felt like I was sitting on top of the world. Eight years of work, eight years of wondering if it would ever happen, and then suddenly it had. LETHAL DECEPTION released in February 2008 and I’ve been writing ever since. My sweet friend Brandilyn Collins actually beat me to announcing it on her blog, which I still laugh about. About a year later, I got a call from Andrea Doering that Revell wanted to publish my first series with them. It’s been a roller coaster ride ever since. One I’ve been honored to be a part of!

What’s your favorite movie?
It’s a tossup between Die Hard and The Sound of Music. Yes, they’re vastly different. LOL.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I’m getting to the point where I like to just kind of forget them. Ha. But my family won’t let me so we usually do something fun like a road trip, eat at a favorite restaurant and so on. Birthdays are fun.
What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Again, so many to choose from. I have really enjoyed the show Tracker. It comes on Sunday nights. I’ve also discovered the show Hope Valley 1874. It’s a spin off from When Calls the Heart. love the chemistry between the Hero and Heroine main characters.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Mexican. I mean chips and queso, right??
What do you do when you have free time?
What’s free time?? Haha…I like to read or write or hang out with my family.
What can readers expect from you next?
MISSING ASSET is up next. It’s Book 2 in the Broken Chains Ranch series and I can promise you the danger doesn’t ease up just because the season changes. The ranch keeps drawing people who need a haven, and trouble keeps following them in.
