What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
When a U.S. Navy dive team discovers a Soviet relic from the Cold War at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, Jack Ryan, Jr. and his team of Campus operators find themselves in a race against the Chinese military to uncover its purpose and prevent it from sparking global war.
How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
Since Jack Ryan, Jr. was introduced in THE TEETH OF THE TIGER, he has found himself in some harrowing situations as an operator with The Campus. But I wanted to put him somewhere so isolated that he knew he was on his own. Help wasn’t coming. It was up to him. And there’s no place on earth more isolated than the bottom of the ocean.
Would you hang out with your hero in real life?
Jack is a loyal and trustworthy friend with an unrivaled moral compass. I’d love to hang out with Jack Ryan, Jr. if not for one little problem… Trouble always seems to find him in the unlikeliest of places.
What are three words that describe your hero?
Intelligent. Charming. Fearless.
What’s something you learned while writing this book?
The men and women who specialize in saturation diving are a different breed. Typical rotations can last for weeks, all spent inside a cramped, pressurized habitat on the surface while breathing a custom mix of helium and oxygen. They work at extreme depths and travel to the ocean floor in a sealed diving bell for six-hour shifts in extreme cold and darkness. It takes a special kind of person to work in that environment.
Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
A combination of both. I typically make minor edits to what I wrote the day before to start each day. And at the conclusion of each act, I’ll read through from the beginning to make sure I’ve nailed the pacing and sprinkled the right number of breadcrumbs along the way. Once I’ve finished, I read through it again, to make sure I’ve closed all the loops in the plot.
What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I’m a sucker for a good burrito. My favorite comes from a coffee shop (of all places) on Coronado in San Diego called Clayton’s. It’s called “The Protein” and comes with eggs, fries, carne asada, adovada, cheese, and sour cream. I love it!
Describe your writing space/office!
I do most of my writing in my home office, a space that is dedicated for just writing. My computer is surrounded by bookshelves with books from my favorite authors and many of my friends. I also have key mementos from my time in the Navy such as flight helmets, model jets, plaques, and other things that remind me that I used to be cool.
Who is an author you admire?
I admire Mark Greaney for many reasons. Aside from the fact that he is an incredible writer who never seems to rest on his past successes, he is down to earth and easily approachable by fans. It’s not a surprise to me why he is so successful.
Is there a book that changed your life?
THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE by Pat Conroy. When I was eight years old, I decided I wanted to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. I read everything I could get my hands on about life at the academy, including A SENSE OF HONOR by James Webb. But Conroy’s book, which was based on his own experience at the Citadel, solidified my choice.
Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I have been a fan of Tom Clancy since I was a kid. I’ve read every book he wrote (some more than once) and continued reading the series after he brought in Mark Greaney as a co-author. Since his passing, the series has been kept alive by a handful of incredibly talented authors, many of whom I consider friends. To say it has been a lifelong dream to write a book set in the universe created by Tom Clancy is an understatement.
When my agent told me I was being considered to continue the Jack Ryan, Jr. series, I was simultaneously thrilled and terrified. Stepping into a role previously held by incredible authors like Mark Greaney, Grant Blackwood, Mike Maden, Don Bentley, and M.P. Woodward is a huge honor. And it comes with a responsibility to deliver a story worthy of the man who started it all.
What’s your favorite genre to read?
Growing up, I primarily read military thrillers and fantasy. I’ve expanded my taste over the years to include horror, crime, and science fiction. Honestly, the genre isn’t as important as the story itself and the exploration of humanity it provides. As the long as the book makes me feel genuine emotion, I’m in!
What’s your favorite movie?
Top Gun. It’s the reason I decided at a young age that I wanted to land jets on aircraft carriers.
What is your favorite season?
Fall. Aside from being able to watch football, I enjoy when the oppressive heat of summer finally loosens its grip and allows for cooler mornings and evenings.
How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I enjoy doing something active to remind myself that I survived another year and am still alive. Other than that, I just enjoy spending a casual day with family.
What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
The movie, “Project Hail Mary” was one of the best films I’ve seen recently. They did a fantastic job adapting it from Andy Weir’s exceptional novel.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I love a good steak! But aside from that, my favorite type of cuisine is probably Japanese. I love sushi, yakisoba, and ramen.
What do you do when you have free time?
Most of my free time is usually spent supporting my kids and their activities. My oldest son works for the Texas A&M Aggies football team, so I try to attend a few games in College Station every year. My younger son plays water polo at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and I plan on attending a few of his games as well. My daughter is the captain of her school’s cheerleading squad, so I spend quite a bit of time on the sidelines cheering on her cheering!
What can readers expect from you next?
I have a very busy 2027 with four titles scheduled to be published. Aside from the next two books in the Jack Ryan, Jr. series, I also have ALPHA STRIKE, a stand-alone title with Blackstone, and FINAL BEARING, the third book in my Silent Horizons series (with co-author Chad Robichaux), coming out in the spring.

About Jack Stewart
Jack Stewart grew up in Seattle, Washington and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy before serving twenty-three years as a fighter pilot. During that time, he flew combat missions from three different aircraft carriers and deployed to Afghanistan as a member of an Air Force Tactical Air Control Party. His last deployment was with a joint special operations counter-terrorism task force in Africa.
Jack is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and holds a Master of Science in Global Leadership from the University of San Diego. He is an airline pilot and has appeared as a military and commercial aviation expert on international cable news. He lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife and three children.
