What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
The devil’s right-hand woman must convince her long-lost, reincarnated husband to renounce their vows so she can wed a prince from Hell. Think Sweet Home Alabama, but with a supernatural twist.
How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I knew I wanted to set DAMNED IF I DO in a small town, and I grew up not far from the fictional town where I ultimately decided to set the book, so I had a bit of real-life experience to draw from. Also, Effie and Finn are originally from Scotland, and I thought there was something poetic about the Appalachian mountains and the Scottish Highlands being part of the same ancient mountain range.
Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Oh, 1000%. Effie’s smart and sassy and I’d love to raid her closet.
What are three words that describe your hero?
Loyal, tenacious, and romantic.
What’s something you learned while writing this book?
Without sharing spoilers, I will say that I learned a fair amount about the various breeds of chickens.
Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I try to wait until I’m completely finished, but I’ll occasionally tweak a line here and there while drafting.
What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I have a massive sweet tooth. Croissants, especially pistachio ones, are one of my favorite treats.
Describe your writing space/office!
I don’t really have a dedicated writing space. I’ll write anywhere—on my couch, in bed, at a coffee shop, even on my phone. I actually wrote a decent portion of the first draft of DAMNED IF I DO in my notes app.
Who is an author you admire?
I will forever be in awe of Nora Roberts.
Is there a book that changed your life?
TWILIGHT. It was the first fandom I ever wrote fanfiction for and if I hadn’t, I might not have considered, many years later, writing original fiction.
Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
DAMNED IF I DO is a standalone follow-up to THE DEVIL SHE KNOWS, which came out last year. I got the idea for The Devil She Knows back in, I want to say, late 2021 or early 2022. But I had other books contracted and scheduled, so I wasn’t able to put the proposal for it together until early 2024. I sent the sample pages and synopsis to my agent, and she loved it, so we went on sub to editors in late February. After a whirlwind week of video calls, we ended up in an 11-imprint auction. It was such a pinch me moment, because I was so excited about the book, but paranormal was a new direction for me, so it was really affirming that so many editors were interested.
What’s your favorite genre to read?
Romance! I’ll read pretty much any subgenre, but I’m partial to paranormal, contemporary, and historical.
What’s your favorite movie?
This is a tough one! I don’t know how I’m supposed to pick just one! I’ll list a few favorites—The Mummy, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Scream, Knives Out, Fools Rush In, and Gone Girl.
What is your favorite season?
Autumn, by far! I love when the air is crisp and the leaves start to change. I also love a good pumpkin muffin.
How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
My favorite way to celebrate would be with loved ones and a lot of really amazing food. If I could travel somewhere fun, that would be wonderful.
What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Lucky, on Apple TV. It’s a limited series based on Marissa Stapley’s novel by the same name, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Annette Bening, Timothy Olyphant, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. It’s a crime thriller, and the acting and pacing are both phenomenal.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
It’s probably a tie between Italian and Thai. But there’s not a single cuisine I’ve tried that I don’t like.
What do you do when you have free time?
When I’m not reading, I love to get out and explore the city, try new restaurants, explore new places, and people watch.
What can readers expect from you next?
IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK, my first new adult romance, releases on December 8, and I have a sapphic romance with mystery elements releasing next spring, titled SOMEONE BORROWED, SOMEONE BLUE.
