Cathie Linz | The Appeal of the wild bad boy hero

January 27, 2009

What is it about wild bad boys that is so appealing? One multi-published author friend of mine told me early on in my career that if a hero is perfect then the heroine is pretty dense not to fall for him right away. But bad boys are always tempting good girl heroines to cross over to their wicked side of the street. They create the conflict and sparks of opposites attracting.

Yes, bad boys. Gotta love ’em. Some of my favorites would include Brockmann’s Sam Starrett, who falls especially hard for a beautiful, intelligent FBI agent. Then there’s Michael Stirling from Julia Quinn’s “When He Was Wicked” who falls in love @ first sight with Francesca Bridgerton. Sebastian, who falls hard for Evie in “THe Devil In Winter”. The ultimate rake.

These are just a few of those tempting bad boys that top my list of favorites 😉 I like that when they do fall in love, they give themselves so completely to that person. It’s the hero who is the vulnerable one, and his greatest desire is to be with that one woman who matters above all others, and spend the rest of his days making her happy. Sigh. What’s not to love?

Some of my fave bad boy heroes on TV include classy bad boy Remington Steele or scruffy bad boy Sawyer on LOST. I also loved The Thomas Crowne Affaire (again Pierce Brosnan in that classy cat burglar bad boy mode). How about you? Cathie

Or, sometimes, we ‘bad girls’ find our kindred spirit in our bad boy! I did. He tells me in his bad boy voice ‘I know you, I know how you think’. Ooo! Attractive, very sexy.
That means we are a little TOO much alike, you see. How do you find one that does fall in love? That is illogical thinking. What does a ‘bad boy gives himself compeltely mean’ exactly?? Most ‘bad’ boys, by virtue of being ‘badly’ behaved, are too selfish to fall in love in the unfortunate ‘real world’. Not so nice in the ‘real ‘ world. Stop perpetuating the myth that it is good to follow a bad boy and there will be a total end to ‘Springer’ Like tv shows and drama drama

The ‘bad ‘ character in Rowan of The wood is a female called Fiana. That is the ‘spin’. I enjoyed the book quite a bit. Hope you will check it out if you love fantasy or horror fiction. Here is the site: RowanoftheWood.com

Colette, a bad boy is not the same as an abusive man. I did enjoy writing about a bad girl in my earlier book BAD GIRLS DON’T where she (a bellydancer) falls for the local by-the-book cop. The theme of opposites attracting is appealing but you also have to have common ground that you discover within your characters. Like in the movie Rocky where he says “She has gaps, I have gaps. Together we fill gaps” Cathie

Sam is in many of the Troubleshooter series, but his & Alyssa's book was "Gone Too Far". It took awhile to get their HEA.
