Alyson Noël | A Secret Academy for Time Traveling Art Thieves

June 29, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

RULING DESTINY

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

RULING DESTINY is the sequel to STEALING INFINITY – a sexy, thrilling, fast-paced tale about a teen with an unusual gift who’s sent to a secret academy for time traveling art thieves, only to find herself caught in an elaborate puzzle of history and time where she just might be one of the missing pieces…RULING DESTINY picks up right where STEALING INFINITY left off, with the romance hotter and the stakes even higher.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I loved the idea of an opulent, off the grid academy, where the students live among priceless pieces of art, and where every luxury they could ever desire is theirs for the taking. The only catch is they can never leave, except when they’re sent back in time to steal precious jewels and art.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

When we first met Natasha, she’s a lot like I was at that age. My high school years were tough, filled with struggle and financial hardships. Like her, I was ditching class on a regular basis, and even though I knew I was failing myself, I didn’t have the tools or the support to stop. Later, as Natasha grows stronger and decides to take control of her life, well, I did that too. So, yes, I’d definitely hang out with the early version of her with a heart full of empathy, and later, as she grows stronger, I’d be right there beside her cheering her on!

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Braxton is: Strong. Sexy. Principled. Tormented. Mysterious.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I’ve learned so much while writing this series—the research has been amazing! I’ve learned a lot about tarot, psychometry, numerology, fine art, Versailles, Renaissance Italy, Regency England, the physics of time travel, Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and more … the list feels endless!

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as I go and begin every writing day with a review/edit of whatever I wrote the day before. Once that’s done, I continue from there.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Champagne and caviar—my husband and I treat ourselves every New Year’s Eve and I always look forward to it!

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I have a home office with a carved wooden desk, a fancy velvet reading chair that’s not actually all that comfortable, but it is pretty! I have framed art on the walls, candles and crystals scattered about, and built-in bookshelves that run the length of the back wall. The space is calm, quiet, and the only place where I get any real writing done.

10–Who is an author you admire?

The Goddess Queen otherwise known as Judy Blume. As a kid, her books made me feel seen, and she opened the door for me and every other YA author that followed.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

There are so many amazing books that have impacted me in so many ways, but I’m going to go waaay back and give a shout out to HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON for teaching me the power of imagination. I recently bought a new copy and keep it nearby.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

Well, I’m on book #30 now, so it’s all kind of a blur at this point. Though the first call is still the one that stands out. I was returning a rental car at the airport when my then agent called with the news and let’s just say, I did not hold back my excitement. There was jumping, a bit of crying, and a very startled Avis attendant watching from a safe distance.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Right now, I’m kind of on a domestic thriller roll. But I also love romance, horror, fantasy, mysteries, the books I read for research…honestly, I like ‘em all!

14–What’s your favorite movie?

I’m not great at picking favorites, but GLADIATOR is one of my faves, and I’m very excited for the sequel that’s apparently in the works.

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall. Mostly because of the sweaters and boots, but also because it’s a great time to travel as the weather is still good, but the crowds have moved on.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

My husband usually plans a surprise trip and the only thing I’m given ahead of time is a packing list. I don’t know how he does it, but it’s always amazing and I’ve never once guessed the destination. I’m a big believer in celebrating birthdays, I’ve lost too many people to ever take them for granted.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

TV show:  I was going to say Succession and Ted Lasso because I’m obsessed…but since everyone knows those I’ll go with Bad Sisters and Derry Girls- both are amazing, and they both happen to take place in Ireland.

Movie: I saw the documentary The Lost Leonardo as part of my research for RULING DESTINY and found it fascinating.

Book: The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin. I read a small section of each morning. I am savoring this one.

Podcast: Smartless is my Sunday morning jam.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

My husband and I are very adventures foodies, which means we’ll try anything. But French Bistro is my go-to comfort food.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

If it’s a block of free time, I travel. If it’s just a day, maybe go to a movie, a museum, or catch up with friends.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m currently working on CHASING ETERNITY—the third and final book in the series.

STEALING INFINITY by Alyson Noël

Stealing Infinity

These days, I’ve been killing it when it comes to letting people down. Now I’ve been kicked out of high school, arrested, and accepted into a remote, off-the-grid school owned and operated by an inscrutable billionaire tech guru.

Gray Wolf Academy is looking for a certain kind of student. Ones that no one will miss. Like me.

Then there’s Braxton. The beautiful, oddly anachronistic guy who showed up right when the trouble started. And he’s a total enigma—which means that I definitely can’t trust him, even if there’s something about him that makes me want to.

They all tell me I have a gift. A very rare gift. And Gray Wolf Academy wants me to learn it. To use it. Because if what they say is true, I have all the time in the world.

And that makes me the most dangerous high school student you’ll never know…
