Hello! My name is Whitney Overland, and I’d love to show you around my hometown of Covington, Wisconsin. As you can see, our quaint town is nestled on the shore of Lake Covington among the tall pines and white birch trees of the Northwoods. Tourists from all over the place visit our little hamlet for the many year-round outdoor activities and our eclectic shops and eateries.
All around the lake, there are family-owned resorts with cabins and cottages. In fact, my lifelong best friend, Emmy Cooper, and her family own and operate Cooper’s Cove Resort. It’s the prettiest spot on the lake. Plus, they’re the nicest people you’ll ever meet!
My family owns the Northwoods Diner on Main Street here in town. It’s not your typical diner. Sure, we have amazing pancakes and the best burgers and fries in the county, but I love offering specials featuring foods straight from the local farmers. Our diner is cozy and looks more like a hunting lodge than the chrome and vinyl versions most people are used to seeing. It’s definitely a hub for community gatherings and gossip over a hot cup of coffee and a slice of warm apple crumb pie.
Picketts Barbecue is another favorite spot for visitors and locals alike. Its Southern food and atmosphere actually fit right in with us Northerners. They also host live music every week. It’s always a lot of fun, especially when my buddy Marcus and his band are playing.
Isn’t our Main Street right out of a romantic comedy? As soon as it stays warm enough, flowers fill all these pots and the planters hanging from the light posts. The town and the shops go all out decorating for the different holidays. Covington loves a good festival! I don’t think I can even pick a favorite…there’s the July 4th Freedom Festival with the boat parade, the Fall Festival we host in conjunction with Bayfield’s Apple Fest, the Covington Christmas Celebration with the lighting of the giant tree in the town square…those are just a few of the events we put on.
Every business in town is locally owned, which is part of what makes Covington unique. The Covy Bean Coffee Shop rivals any chain. The minute you walk into Patty’s Cakes Bakery, you feel like a kid in a candy store. The Next Chapter Bookstore is our newest addition and has already established several popular book clubs. We also have antique and vintage shops, a store for all things outdoors, a chocolate shop, boutiques, and churches.
Our town square is the heart of Covington. With its gingerbread trim, the white gazebo is perfect for concerts, meetings, ceremonies, and weddings. The green space, with its picnic tables and red Adirondack chairs, begs families and friends to hang around for a while. Since the square is practically on the lakeshore, the view is magnificent.
The public beach and a marina are a little way down from the square. Those are busy for just a couple of months in the summer. Our weather up here is only hot enough for swimming for a short time. But winter sports like snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing, and my favorite—sitting by the fire with a good book and a cup of hot cocoa—are as popular as warm-weather activities.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this little tour of Covington. I’ve barely scratched the surface of all the wonderful features of our Northwoods slice of heaven. There’s something special about this place and the people that live here. Enjoy!

Annie McEwen is the author of the Northwoods Mysteries Series, set amongst the tall pines and sparkling lakes of northern Wisconsin where she spent vacations as a kid. Because of a sweet love story between her youngest sister and a local Wisconsin boy (storyline idea!), she’s still been able to keep on visiting the beautiful place that means so much to her.
Annie and her husband are empty nesters—their son is married to his high-school sweetheart, and their daughter is married with two adorable toddler boys. Being grandparents is definitely the best gig ever! They also have four fur babies.
