Character: Marcus Brewer aka Marcus with the Mullet
How would you describe your family or your childhood?
I had a great childhood, even if my parents did uproot me from middle Tennessee and haul me all the way to Covington, Wisconsin when I was in elementary school. I always joke that it could’ve really messed me up if I hadn’t been blessed with such a delightful personality and remarkable ability to adapt. But in all honesty, I was the wise-crackin’, redneck kid with the funny accent and a mullet who used humor as a defense mechanism. Luckily for me, two goofball girls with hearts of gold who’d been best friends literally their whole lives, Emmy Cooper and Whitney Overland, didn’t believe anyone should eat lunch alone. Fast-forward twenty years, and we’re still thick as thieves. I might not have siblings, but they’re like sisters to me.
My parents are back in Tennessee, but I decided to stay put for now. Fortunately, my cousin Sam has made his way up here. It’s been awesome.
What was your greatest talent?
I might not be what you’d call academically gifted, but put an instrument in front of me, and chances are I can play it. Guitar, banjo, drums, piano… You name it. Not to brag, but I’ve got a pretty decent singing voice too. Okay, maybe that was bragging a little.
My band, The Brewer Band – creative name, I know – has played all over the tri-state area and Tennessee. We mostly do country and pop covers, but pop with a Southern twist. Sam and I have written several original songs that we perform too. There’s nothing quite like playing something you write and watching a crowd get into it. Unless they’re throwing things… Then you probably oughta rethink the song.
Significant other?
Oof! What’s that old Facebook status? “It’s Complicated.” Let’s just say I’m still holding out hope there’s a love out there for me like the kind I’ve seen my friends find. I’m a patient man.
Well…moderately patient. Whoever she is, she could pick up the pace a little.
Biggest challenge in relationships?
I’m not saying this goes for all relationships, but for me – trust. Let’s just say I’ve been burned a time or two, and it makes you a little more careful about who you hand the matches to.
Well, that got deep fast. Next question.
Where do you live?
I’ve got an apartment on Main Street in downtown Covington on the second floor above one of the businesses. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s got some pretty cool architectural stuff going on – original hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, that kind of thing.
Of course, having an interior designer for a best friend means Emmy’s always showing up with something she found at a thrift store or yard sale that she swears will look awesome in my place. She’s usually right, which is annoying because then I have to tell her she’s right. (Don’t tell her I said that.)
It’s the perfect spot – Close to work and all the other important places (aka food and drink). Plus, I can see the lake from my living room window.
Do you have any enemies?
Not that I can think of. I’m a pretty easygoing guy. But mess with my family or friends? Congratulations. You just made the list.
I might even quit being charming.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Neither. Hopefully both later down the road.
What do you do for a living?
I do a little bit of everything – except cook – at Pickett’s BBQ Restaurant in Covington. Trust me, everybody’s better off that way. I also book the entertainment for all three Pickett’s locations.
And then there’s The Brewer Band, like I talked about earlier.
What I didn’t mention is that a few of my original songs have actually been recorded by some pretty big-name country artists. I’m not gonna lie – I’m pretty proud of that.
Greatest source of joy?
Besides watching folks enjoy my music, I’d have to say making people laugh. I was a bit of a class clown in school – try not to look too shocked – and I guess I never really grew out of it. There’s just something about making somebody burst into tears of laughter, especially when they’re having a rough day. I guess it makes mine a little better too.
Lucky for me, I’m surrounded by people who give me plenty of material.
What keeps you awake at night?
I’d love to come up with something witty here, mostly because I’m not looking to wade too deep into the ol’ feelings bag. But if I’m being serious, I guess I worry sometimes about not finding that special someone. About always being the fifth wheel.
I know I’m still young and there’s plenty of time, but when you see it happening for everybody around you, it makes a guy wonder, ya know?
Okay, that’s enough feelings for one day. Somebody hand me my guitar.
What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Keeping Emmy out of danger! I love that girl, but she sure has a knack for getting herself tangled up in shenanigans. And dead bodies. Way too many dead bodies.
Luckily, Mullet Man is always ready to swoop in and save the day. The cape is metaphorical. The mullet is not.
What are three things you cannot live without?
My friends/family (Sorry, that’s gotta count as one!), my guitar, and my hair products.
