He thinks he’s pretty funny, so if you want a birthday card with the hind end of a donkey on it, or a get-well-soon card with a person wrapped up like a mummy, that’s where you should go. 1–What is the title of your latest release? HAUNT SWEET HOME 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? “Don’t talk today about what we do at night.” Mara Billings gets hired as the production assistant on the night crew of reality TV’s Haunt Sweet Home, which bills itself as a combination fixer-upper and paranormal show. Her job is to haunt the houses, but maybe she’s the haunted one. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? It needed to take place in an area with a lot of very old (for the US, anyway) and idiosyncratic houses, where there are still woods.  I figured I’d be better able to nail the character of the woods and the old houses in New England, since I’ve stayed in a fair number of motels up there, and hiked around in the woods, and played in a fair number of grand old houses. And New England has all those great stone walls to stumble across. Haunt Sweet Home the show, as I envision it, spends each season in a different area, but this particular season that I focus on for the book takes place in small town western Massachusetts….

A chronicle of a Black family with a time travel curse. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I always knew my story would primarily take place in Charlottesville, Virginia on the land where my sixth great-grandmother lived. After discovering Amy Bowles-Farrow (1735-1797) and her amazing life purchasing hundreds of acres as a free Black woman right after the American Revolution, I couldn’t help but imagine the lives of the Bridge family. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? In a heartbeat! My book has multiple protagonists, and each of them brings a unique perspective. Amelia in the 1920s wants to become a physician and help others, but she wrestles with survivor’s guilt. Reba in the 1810s faces the time travel curse as she wrestles with being the best mother possible to her three children. Sabrina in the 1780s loves a man she can never have and must contend with his time travelling. And finally, Cecily, a history professor from the 1960s, learns about each of these women and her inevitable fall in…

A newly engaged couple – Uli and Lise – gets separated by the Berlin Wall and fight to return to each other; but as time, distance and suspicion grow, how long can true love survive in the divided city? 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I knew from the outset that the Berlin Wall was going to be a key feature of the story, so that gave me my location; however, it was something of a process to figure out where specifically in Berlin the story would take place. I considered several different sites along the Wall for the main action of the story, and my considerations for which neighborhood I would choose were much the same as for my characters: what is the soil composition? What does the underground infrastructure look like? It’s a family story of heartache and hope—truth and justice as a determined aunt and a dedicated journalist team up to search for her young niece who has been abducted from the Foundling Hospital, London’s oldest children’s charity home. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? My last nine novels have been set in England in the late Victorian and Edwardian Eras, and my readers have come to expect stories set in those time periods. In my research, I saw a painting of a woman giving her baby into the care of the Foundling Hospital. That image gripped my heart. As I started the research, I learned the mothers sometimes left small items, which they called tokens, as identifiers, in the hope that if their situation changed, they might be able to return and reclaim their child.
