Jill Eileen Smith | Adam and Eve Before and After Their Fall Into Sin
Author Guest / February 16, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? DAUGHTER OF EDEN, EVE’S STORY 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? From the moment of their creation, they had it all until the Unseen One told them they didn’t, and she believed him. If only she could go back and make a different choice. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? The Bible made that choice for me since the story focuses on Adam and Eve before and after their fall into sin. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Definitely. I find Eve fascinating, and I would love to get to know her in a real-life way, not just in my imagination. One day, in heaven, I will. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Conflicted, Forgiving, Loving 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I came to better understand and appreciate the unseen realm. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? I edit as I write, but I still do at least four rewrites of every book, sometimes more. 8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence? Chocolate 9–Describe your writing space/office! My official “office”…

Jane Yolen | Stories and Poems Taking Place All Around the World
Author Guest / February 16, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE SCARLET CIRCUS  2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? SF and Fantasy short stories and poems by Nebula and World Fantasy winner.  3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? These are individual stories and poems, so they take place all around the world and in fantasy settings as well. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Depends on which of the protagonists you mean! Some are horrific, some are fantastical. You get a wide variety so my choices might not be yours! 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?  See above. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? These are mostly stories and poems that have been published first in magazines or anthologies, and some I hadn’t reread in years.  So what I learned was that it was fun and not awful to spend time with my old pieces. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? Even though these were old pieces (except for a bunch of the poems which were new) I rewrote, smoothed out, updated when necessary. Time doesn’t stand still in…

Al Hess | Mad Max + Blade Runner, But Cozy and Gay
Author Guest / February 15, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? WORLD RUNNING DOWN 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Mad Max+Blade Runner, but cozy n’ gay Wasteland salvager Valentine Weis needs a visa into Salt Lake City in order to transition; when he’s offered one as payment for retrieving fugitive androids—then discovers they’re self-aware—he’ll risk his own dream to ensure they have the chance to live theirs. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Every summer as a teen, I used to visit relatives in both Salt Lake and the nearest Nevada towns. The salt flats between Wendover, NV and Salt Lake City, UT have an almost otherworldly quality, and they seemed like the perfect setting for a wasteland road trip. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Absolutely! Valentine is far more extroverted than I am, but we have things in common, and he would know all the good queer hangouts. Osric and I would definitely discuss art. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? For Valentine: Scrappy, selfless, snarky For Osric: Thoughtful, good-natured, artistic 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I learned that if you’re going to…

Alexis Daria | Dancing, Romance, and Reality TV
Author Guest / February 15, 2023

What inspired you to use a dancing theme for a romance series? Do you enjoy dancing? While I am not a dancer by any stretch of the imagination, I’ve always loved watching dance movies (“dansicals,” I call them), and I’m a big fan of Dancing with the Stars. Dance tells a story through movement and has the power to touch the viewer emotionally, and I admire the hard work and dedication that goes into being a professional dancer. That combined with the high-pressure world of a reality TV dance competition made for a fun and challenging setting for a romance series.   In TAKE THE LEAD, you also have the main characters involved in reality TV. Are you a fan? If so, which shows or types of reality shows? I’ve definitely watched more than my fair share of reality shows! When I watch, I play a game to spot the metaphorical hand of the producer manipulating the storyline and try to guess what’s real and what’s manufactured. But for the most part I prefer shows where the participants go on (what seems to be) a genuine inner growth journey, which is why I like Dancing with the Stars. It’s not…

Meg Napier | So many words to read!
Author Guest / February 15, 2023

If I had a second for every task I’m behind in right now, I’d be a chronological millionaire. My problem, of course, is words. So many words to read! (Guilty secret: I love newspapers – printed ones – almost as much as I love books!) I’ve taken to “cheating” the last several years: unable to read all that I want, I listen to audiobooks constantly. Where am I going with this? Let me share a newly discovered treasure. If you’re anything like me, you rank the novelist Sherry Thomas among your deities. I say “novelist” because she does it all: historical romance, romantic (historical) suspense, fantasy, YA, and contemporary. THE ONE IN MY HEART is her unforgettable contemporary, published in 2015. But just recently, Ms. Thomas got together with the marvelous narrator, Kate Reading, and the two of them created an audio version of The One In My Heart. What’s more, they priced it compassionately for Overdrive and other services, so your local library can probably be easily convinced to buy it as mine was. I urge you to take a second look—or listen—to this magnificent novel. And if you’ve never experienced it before, don’t waste another moment. The only…

Chitra Divakaruni | A Sweeping Story of Three Sisters
Author Guest / February 14, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? INDEPENDENCE 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Set during the partition of British India in 1947, a time when neighbor was pitted against neighbor and families were torn apart, Chitra Divakaruni’s novel brings to life the sweeping story of three sisters caught up in events beyond their control, and their unbreakable bond as they struggle against powerful odds. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Since it was about India’s independence, I already knew the country. I come from the Eastern border, and not much has been written in English about the Partition struggles in that region, so I knew I wanted to explore that. One of the sisters, Priya, is set on being a doctor, and since it is almost impossible for Indian women at that time to get into medical colleges, I knew she would be coming to America. I researched and discovered Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania—it was the perfect fit. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? The three sisters are a lively, intelligent lot with strong opinions. Two of them are excellent singers, and one has read…

Rochelle Bilow | American Food Writer Moves to Scotland
Author Guest / February 14, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? RUBY SPENCER’S WHISKY YEAR 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? 30-something American food writer moves to Scotland for a year to “see what happens” and meets a very happening, handsome “who.” 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? After a weeklong bout with the flu in 2019, I binged the entire Outlander series. I fell in love with Scotland from afar, but realized I was very likely romanticizing it (and wasn’t the only one). I wondered what would happen if a wide-eyed American traveled to the country after marinating in a tubful of preconceived notions about it. In researching the book, I went to Scotland on a solo trip and was glad I did; it informed Ruby’s experience and made the setting much more vibrant. 4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life? Absolutely. I’d love to go to a fancy restaurant together and splurge on the most expensive bottle of wine on the menu. I feel like we’d dish about working for food magazines and how we both secretly hated living in New York City. 5–What are three words that describe your…

Rachel Koller Croft | A Hot Girl Con Artist and Old Money
Author Guest / February 14, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? STONE COLD FOX 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Stone Cold Fox is about Bea, a hot girl con artist who aims to marry into the 1 percent to bury her dark past for good, but it won’t be so easy to infiltrate a family this rich, especially when the best friend of her target husband wants nothing more than to put Bea in her place at any cost. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Old money is in New York so that’s where Bea had to be. As for the other cities briefly featured in Bea’s past, I chose wealthy neighborhoods in major metropolitan areas. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? One hundred percent. An emphatic yes. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Ambitious. Vicious. Hilarious. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? That mommy issues may be even more dire than those of the daddy variety. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? I’ll do casual edits that I catch in the moment, but I don’t do any major…

Robin Yeatman | A Darkly Funny Story
Author Guest / February 14, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release? BOOKWORM   2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? A darkly funny story about a woman in an unhappy marriage who uses the power of her imagination and love of books to find fulfillment at whatever cost.   3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I knew my book would be set in Montreal because that’s where I was living while I was writing it.  Montreal is such a fantastic city, too.  It’s beautiful, it’s chic, it’s got that European vibe to it.  But it’s also got severe weather, language tensions, and crumbling roads.  So it was perfect for a noir style story.   4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? I think I would!  She might not warm up to me right away, but once we got talking about books, I think we would hit it off.  I might not drink a smoothie if she offered it to me, though…   5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Secretive, lonely, underestimated.   6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I learned that the story will reveal itself to me as…
