Cassandra Rose Clarke | 20 Questions: DEMON SONG
Author Guest / November 3, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? DEMON SONG 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? A demon and a former demon-hunter join forces to prevent hell on Earth from becoming the literal truth – and find their happily-ever-after in the process. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Demon Song is the second book in a duology. The first book, Singing with the Devil, takes place in a Louisiana swamp, and I wanted the sequel to have a totally different setting to liven things up. So I decided to have the majority of the action take place in the desert, namely west Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. There are also some plot reasons why the desert works, but I don’t want to get into spoilers! 4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life? Absolutely! We have similar tastes in music, so I think we’d get along. That said – she’s definitely cooler than me. 5–What are three words that describe your hero? Demon. Gentle. Brutal. You’ll have to read the book to see how they all fit together! 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? Sometimes you need to…

The Character Most Likely – Lisa Edmonds
Author Guest / November 3, 2022

To celebrate Lisa Edmonds‘ new book MORTAL HEART, we here at Fresh Fiction thought it would be a fun way for readers to get to know her characters better (from her many many fab books) to play a little game we call “The Character Most Likely”. If you’re new to her Alice Worth world – It’s a mix of magic and action-packed storytelling. Lisa is free to select her answers from any of her paranormal series.   Most likely to figure out a way to use an enemy’s strength against them? Definitely Alice! After a lifetime of fighting for survival, she instinctually evaluates everyone around her to figure out their strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and motivations, because she knows she has to be prepared in case they turn against her.  Alice Worth series Most likely to be underestimated? Malcolm, Alice’s snarky ghost sidekick, always gets underestimated – even by Alice. People and supernatural beings tend to think just because he’s dead that he’ll be easy to defeat. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. And like Alice, he plays his cards very close to the vest, especially when it comes to his powers and abilities. He even surprises me sometimes, and…

Tracey Martin | Author-Reader Match: DARKEST MISERY
Author Guest / November 3, 2022

Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match” where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It’s our great pleasure to present Tracey Martin!   Writes: Tracey Martin writes action-packed urban fantasy with heroines who know how to kick ass and the people who love them for it. In DARKEST MISERY, the fourth book in the Miss Misery series, the race to stop the apocalypse is on. Under the name Alanna Martin, she’s the author of the Hearts of Alaska contemporary romance series. If you can’t find her online, it’s because she’s lost in the woods, probably with a large cup of coffee.   What I’m looking for in my ideal reader match: Must love a strong, snarky heroine Likes lots of…

Tori Whitaker | Title Challenge: A MATTER OF HAPPINESS
Author Guest / November 2, 2022

Hello! I’m Tori Whitaker, and A MATTER OF HAPPINESS is my second novel that shifts between the past and present. It’s the story of two fiercely independent women born a century apart and the cherished heirloom that connects them. So let’s play along with the title challenge game and see what more we can learn!   A  is for the adventurous main character in the historical thread. It’s 1920 and Violet is 19, craving to live independently, buy a car of her own, travel, and answer to no one. When she loses her clerical job at a Kentucky distillery, she’s off to Detroit, the fastest-growing city in America, for work in the motor car boom.     M   is for Melanie, Violet’s headstrong great-great-great niece. In 2018, she’s a rising star in a Kentucky bourbon distillery and has inherited Violet’s faded red automobile that’s stored in a crumbling carriage house.   A   is for automobile—Violet’s 1923 Jordan MX convertible. Melanie discovers a journal hidden in the car that reveals the surprising wild side of Violet in the roaring twenties.   T   is for tasting. If you’re gonna sip bourbon, it’s all about the “nose” (smell) and the taste, which can…

Rich Koslowski | 20 Questions: F.A.R.M. SYSTEM
Author Guest / November 2, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? F.A.R.M. SYSTEM. A 208-page, full-color graphic novel   2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? If super-heroes were out there, in our world, they’d have a Minor League system like baseball –  a system where they’re signed on and represented by Agents to train them, get them the best Marketers, Costume Designers, and Sensitivity Seminars to prepare them for the “Big Leagues.” And get them the best contracts/money! Of course, just like most minor leaguer baseball players, most of the F.AR.M. System recruits flounder in the system, never getting “the call.” Either because of their power set, lack of marketability, or unstable psychological tests. But sometimes, sometimes even the undesirable prospects land deals with teams of, shall we say, a less reputable ilk!   3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Physically take place? In some remote, rural farm field/training facility that was formerly owned by a minor league baseball team. It was a perfect facility and safe setting to train these very powerful young, inexperienced prospects. Away from populated areas in case something goes wrong and away from “temptations.” The agent that operates the F.A.R.M. SYSTEM facility is very shrewd.   4–Would…

Jasmine Mas | 20 Questions: PSYCHO BEASTS
Author Guest / November 2, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? PSYCHO BEASTS 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? Welcome to Serpentine City. The Mafia rule and we’re about to be indoctrinated. Cobra’s the heir to the throne, and he’s been given an ultimatum. Form a pack…or else. Now, we’re fighting for our lives and each other. Will Jax, Xerxes, Ascher, and Cobra fall apart under the pressure? Will Sadie be strong enough to handle what they want? Will their tension crumble into hatred? Or build into love? Between training and fighting for our lives, it’s about to go down like never before. We may have survived the Fae realm, but the real test has just begun. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I love a rainy futuristic cityscape, so that was why I made the beast realm all glittery skyscrapers and storms. 4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life? Yes, Sadie is a funny heroine who says ridiculous things. 5–What are three words that describe your hero? Psycho. Alphahole. Possessive. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I learned that I have the propensity to write very violent (consensual) smut scenes. Think…

Lisa Ballantyne | Exclusive Excerpt: THE INNOCENT ONE
Author Guest / November 1, 2022

Excerpt from THE INNOCENT ONE by Lisa Ballantyne Copyright © 2022   PROLOGUE   Frankie walked to work, enjoying the early morning air, unaware that today was the day she was going to die. She often went into work this early, when the throng of gawky students was still asleep, but these past few weeks she’d made a point of it because it was the coolest part of the day. She would let herself into her office in the Classics building and plunge into her book on the Macedonian conquest of the Persian Empire. It was due to be published in November and she hoped to present it before then, a keynote speech at Princeton University. It was going to be another searing hot day and already it was clammy, a film on her skin. She wore a long, loose skirt and flat sandals. It was just over an hour’s walk from the riverside cottage she shared with her husband, Jon, just off Fen Road; the rooms small and dusty, the back garden long and semi-wild, leading right down onto the banks of the Cam. Early afternoon she would walk home again, let Artemis out, and eat lunch at the…

Top Five Songs to Get to Know THE REWIND by Allison Winn Scotch
Author Guest / November 1, 2022

I’m an author who is always inspired by music – I always say that if I weren’t a novelist, I’d probably take my shot as a songwriter, and THE REWIND is no exception. In fact, music is folded into the plot and layered onto the page. Here are a few of the songs I had on repeat while I wrote the book and may just show up in Frankie and Ezra’s journey.   WITH OR WITHOUT YOU – U2 This song is foundational in their relationship. It was playing the first time that Ezra kissed Frankie or Frankie kissed Ezra (it was all such a blur, neither of them is quite sure), and haunts them throughout the next ten years. What I personally love about it is the ache in Bono’s voice as he wails the chorus, and how when you’re falling in love, you really do have to give yourself away, even if it’s going to hurt you in the end. We’ve all had that person whom we craved but who also made us miserable, and this song is so emblematic of that feeling for me.   MELT WITH YOU – MODERN ENGLISH Ahhhh is there a better song…

Alix Rickloff | 20 Questions: THE GIRLS IN NAVY BLUE
Author Guest / November 1, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE GIRLS IN NAVY BLUE 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? THE GIRLS IN NAVY BLUE is a dual timeline novel, moving between the WWI-era lives of three women who join the Navy as “yeomanettes” and 1968 when a young divorcee begins to uncover the secrets they kept for fifty years. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? Norfolk VA was the perfect setting for this book; not only was it a center of naval activities during WWI with over 1000 yeomanettes stationed there, but it’s an area and a landscape I know well having grown up on the Chesapeake Bay. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Probably not. My characters live far more interesting lives than I do. I’d probably be too boring for the likes of them. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Viv is determined, loyal, and, in the end, courageous. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? Everything I learned about the yeomanettes and their service was new to me. I had never heard of these women before which is tragic considering the amazing contributions they made…
