Cara Hogarth | Disreputable Medieval Minstrels
Author Guest / June 15, 2022

“Sir William, I ask you to discard your knighthood for a season and become a wandering minstrel.” Okay, I wasn’t very imaginative with my title. The Minstrel and Her Knight is exactly what the label suggests – a historical romance starring medieval minstrels. My hero, Sir William, is an English knight who has been emotionally scarred by fighting in France. He would much prefer to live a minstrel life. The only problem is that this is a one-way decision, and that way is precipitously down. Wandering entertainers were considered the dregs of society. Once Will has come out as a minstrel, his father will disown him and he’ll no longer be a privileged nobleman. What’s more, he’ll never be able to marry well, for what lady would ever wed a disreputable minstrel? So Will hesitates. He doesn’t dare to follow his dream – until he is offered the chance to protect a talented musician through France while pretending to be a minstrel. Will leaps at the chance. The problem is, he doesn’t realise the young man he accompanies is also in disguise. So why were medieval minstrels considered the lowest of the low? It was partly because many of them wandered from…

Heather Atkinson Interview – Inspiration and Historical Thrillers
Author Guest , Interviews / June 15, 2022

When I first heard about your book THE MISSING GIRLS OF ALARDYCE HOUSE, I was intrigued because it sounded like the kind of historical gothic mystery I adore. What inspired you to write this book, and why a trilogy?  Does each book pick up where the previous one left off? Does each book focus on the same characters? Is each book told from the same character’s perspective? I was inspired to write this series by a clip from Downton Abbey. I’d never actually watched the program before, but I saw a snippet of it on Harry Hill’s TV Burp of all things. It was a scene where the family were gathered around the table for dinner and I saw the character Thomas, played by the lovely Rob James Collier. This inspired the character of Matthew. He sprung to life in my mind very vividly and quickly. I wrote the first book in just three weeks and that was handwritten in a notebook, not even on a laptop. The book just poured out of me so quickly my hand could barely keep up with my brain. It was the most intense writing experience I’ve ever had. Each book in the series…

Lizzy Dent | 20 Questions: THE SETUP
Author Guest / June 14, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? THE SETUP 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? The summer long transformation of astrology-obsessed Mara, who must loosen her grip on fate and find her own direction in life. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I wanted to set it coastal Kent, England among the fish and chips and the white chalk cliffs. 4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life? Errrr.. it would probably take some time. Mara needs trust and love to let her sweet, charming side out. 5–What are three words that describe your protagonist? Lonely, lovely, and learning. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? To let go of trying to relate to my MC completely. 7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done? I edit what I wrote the day before every day. 8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence? Pizza without doubt. But can I also add a good BLT. A perfect roast chicken. 9–Describe your writing space/office! I have a desk in my bedroom, but mostly I work from a co-working space in a village near my house. It’s above an…

Jill Shalvis Interview – Complex Characters With Heart
Author Guest / June 14, 2022

When I first started reading contemporary romances, I noticed the different philosophies the various authors had running through their series. One of the things I’d notice was whether an author tended to “Pollyanna” the ending (have everything resolved, all conflict go poof like it never was, all the characters blissfully getting along with people who had wronged them, etc.), or whether the author had an ending that reflected how complicated life is and how complex the characters are. One thing I always liked about Jill Shalvis’ books was that she usually went with the latter. In THE FRIENDSHIP PACT, Tae goes through some real struggles. How would you describe her journey in this story? Jill Shalvis: Tae’s journey is complicated, both personally and professionally. She’s in the middle of opening her own event planning service. She’s scrappy and determined, always has been, but she knows she needs this to succeed. Growing up dirt poor had hammered the point home that she doesn’t ever want to be scared and destitute again. She takes some of that attitude into her personal relationships, which means she tends to scare people away. Luckily, Riggs doesn’t scare easily. So basically, her journey is to love…

Andie J. Christopher Interview – Rom-Com with Real Life Inspiration
Author Guest / June 14, 2022

What inspired you to write THANK YOU, NEXT? Any of your own personal experiences, or people you’ve known find their way into this story? About a decade ago, long before wrote romance, I turned on Say Yes to the Dress and saw a guy that I’d had feelings for as the fiance on the show. I was in a pretty low place in my own personal life, so it was a mix of both funny and sad. (He also looked like Michael B. Jordan, which weighed heavily in the “sad” column.) Whenever I told that story in a group of authors, people would ask me when I was going to put it into a book. And this seemed like the right time to do it. How would you describe the dynamic between Alex and Will? One of my favorite romantic tropes is the “friends-to-enemies-to-lovers.” I love the angsty push-pull of that dynamic. Because there’s history, the feelings are really intense, but it takes a lot to get over the inertia. When the characters finally get together, it feels like an explosion. Would you say there’s an equal amount of romance and humor in this story, or does one element dominate?…

Victoria Gilbert | 20 Questions: A FATAL BOOKING
Author Guest / June 13, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release? A FATAL BOOKING, book 3 in the Booklover’s B&B series 2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? B&B owner Charlotte and her 77-year-old former spy neighbor are pitted against a tea party poisoner in a deadly game of wits. 3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place? I chose Beaufort, NC – which is a real town, by the way – because I wanted this series to take place near the North Carolina coast, but also wanted a historic town that offered the perfect setting for a charming bed-and-breakfast. I have visited Beaufort numerous times, so feel that I’m able to provide a sense of authenticity in the books. 4–Would you hang out with your sleuth in real life? I would definitely enjoy spending time with Charlotte. We could discuss books, among other things! (Charlotte is a former English teacher who now runs a literary-themed B&B). 5–What are three words that describe your sleuth? Intelligent, kind, and courageous. 6–What’s something you learned while writing this book? I learned a lot about motorboats, specifically vintage cabin cruisers, as they do figure into the plot. I’ve never owned or…

Gayleen Froese | Exclusive Excerpt: THE GIRL WHOSE LUCK RAN OUT
Author Guest / June 13, 2022

This is an exclusive excerpt from The Girl Whose Luck Ran Out by Gayleen Froese, coming out June 14, 2022 from DSP Publications. Find out more or place an order here.   The story so far: It’s been a busy few days for private detective Ben Ames, who has taken on the case of a missing university student, and found himself looking after his ex-boyfriend Jesse. Jess is a musician who goes by the stage name Jack Lowe, and a case of pneumonia caused him to cancel the rest of his tour on the night he came through Ben’s town. Now Ben is trying to solve his case, keep an eye on Jess and deal with his resentment about their break-up seven years ago. We join them in Ben’s car, chasing down a lead in a mountain town. I left the radio on. It was one of those “hits of the past five decades” stations, the furthest possible thing from cool, but I didn’t think Jess would mind. However he might have acted in public, the truth was, he approached most music with the uncritical joy of a  Labrador throwing itself in a lake. “Did I do an interview with…

Lauren Belfer | 20 Questions: ASHTON HALL
Author Guest / June 13, 2022

1 – What is the title of your latest release? ASHTON HALL 2 – What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book? ASHTON HALL is about an American woman, Hannah Larson, who travels to an English manor house with her young son, Nicky, to care for an ill relative. When Nicky stumbles upon a dark secret from the past in an abandoned part of the house, Hannah begins a quest to solve a centuries-old mystery — just as she’s trying to come to terms with a devastating discovery in her own life. 3 – How did you decide where your book was going to take place? From the time I was young, I’ve adored all things British — literature, art, music, history, moves, TV shows. When I was in my early twenties, I was lucky enough to stay at a British stately home, Blickling Hall, in an apartment rented by a friend of a friend. While I was there, I had the idea for the novel that became ASHTON HALL, and I made preliminary notes. Years passed, and I pursued other projects. But when my husband was invited to be a Visiting Fellow at an institute in Cambridge, England, and…
