Catherine Haustein | Conversations in Character with Professor Gormley Grimn

August 31, 2023

Book Title: SNAKES IN THE CLASS

Character Name: Professor Gormley Grimn

How would you describe your past?

I was in graduate school studying to be a scientist, high on my dreams of helping humanity. The world of monsters and demigods was right beneath my nose, but I was unaware of it. Little did I know my flunky study partner was a minor deity leaning on me to help him pass organic chemistry. I admit, he was cute and I was a flirty free-spirt but I didn’t deserve what came next. His jealous fiancé cursed me!  My strawberry blonde hair gave way to corn snakes. My professor died without explanation. I was a gorgon, a monster who killed my harmless teacher.

Biggest challenge in relationships?

I’m not always safe to be around and now and then during a passionate encounter, one of my snakes will fall off.

Where do you live? What do you do for a living?

I’m a professor at Manster College, a school for humanoid monster organisms, in the small town of Eerily. I teach my monstrous students chemistry and do my best to help them learn to fit in with humans so they can get jobs. Unfortunately, the college is having hard times financially. My chemistry lab is falling apart!

Do you have any enemies?

Yes! It seems as if everyone from a desultory mercenary to the Board of Trustees is hellbent on making me and my students for-profit killers. To complicate things, the Eerily Purity League wants to stamp out monsters entirely.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?

I had to abandon my child for his own safety.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?

I’m a teacher so in the past preparing lessons, setting up labs, and grading papers kept me occupied. Teaching was all I needed until I went to that fateful faculty meeting and got a good look at sexy Ormr Snaakemon. He’s a man above the waist and a snake below. You should see how he moves! Now, my greatest joy is being near him, fantasizing about being wrapped in his tail.

What keeps you awake at night?

Ormr Snaakemon. Wow. Too bad snakes don’t mate for life, but I plan to enjoy him while I can.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?

Besides the falling ceiling in my lab and all the people who have plans for me? I don’t understand how gorgon powers work! I’d never advocate using my ancient curse, yet I must understand it. The trouble is, how can my gorgon students and I design a study of gorgon powers? It would be unethical to test them on human subjects. Yet this is exactly what the college president is demanding. He’s the Grim Reaper so how can I say no?

SNAKES IN THE CLASS by Catherine Haustein

Snakes in the Class

At Manster College, monster professors guide students in the fine art of fitting into human society–easier said than done.

Professor Gormley Grimn didn’t choose the Gorgon life—the Gorgon life chose her…sort of. When she was cursed by the jealous fiancée of her study partner, Gormley fled, leaving those she loved behind to become a professor of chemistry at Manster College. It’s a safely secluded life, devoid of sex–until she falls into a lusty affair with Dean Ormr Snaakemon—half smooth-skinned man, half smooth-scaled snake, one hundred percent hottie. Life as a cursed Gorgon finally doesn’t seem so bad. Gormley’s a lover, not a killer.

When the local Purity League vows to stamp out all monsters, she’s pushed to a decision.  Should she and her students stick with her no-killing principles, or join forces with the anti-Purity League Knobbers—a group of demigods, including the woman who cursed her?   When all you need is love and a college education, does anything make fighting worth it?

About Catherine Haustein

Catherine Haustein

A childhood spent in the Midwest and Washington D.C. left Catherine Haustein with a fascination for political intrigue. She even ran for office once. She lost but came away with a treasure-trove of observations and an appreciation for people who keep their hand on the wheel of this experiment known as democracy.

A clandestine alchemist, she’s a professor emerita of chemistry and currently a freelance chemist and author. Other than these useful skills, she has a knack for spotting four-leafed clovers. She’s also a fan of lost causes, including Medusa, who she views as completely misunderstood.
