Fresh FIction Box Not To Miss

Elisse Hay | An Obsession Fueled Group of Magi

June 30, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

VILLAINS BY NECESSITY

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

An obsession fueled group of magi are coming for her client speaking words of love. Good thing she’s bad at listening.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Villains is the second book in a series. I actually wrote book 1 and 3 before I wrote Villains, which fits between them. So it was mostly to do with the “missing untold story”.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Maybe, if she’d sit still for long enough and wasn’t covered in blood.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Headstrong, tough, and vulnerable.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

To really home in on where the action starts and stops during fight scenes. This book is high action, and sometimes the conflict rolls into more conflict. Keeping that pace up is exhausting to read, though, so I needed to identify the core elements of the conflict, so it was digestible.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Sort of both. When I sit down to write I’ll often read over the last few pages, but I’ll also do a few full sweeps before sending it to anyone else.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I go through phases. Right now, I’m in a hot dog with fried onion phase.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

Off to the corner of our loungeroom, so I’m both connected to what’s going on around me, and separate.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Tamora Pierce’s YA fantasy series gave me hope as a teen! I frequently think about picking them up again and hope I’ll have time to in the next few months, but thinking back on those books, when so much of the genre was a bunch of dudes running out and getting up to unlikely adventures… I needed that rep, and she did it well.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

So many! The major one was probably Lord of the Rings, which I read before it was a movie and when I was far too young to be reading such things. That got me labelled as a nerd, which helped me find my people.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be

published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

It was summer. I was just cruising through my emails while enjoying some sunshine and chatting to a friend, and there was an email in my inbox. There were a lot of feelings involved in that!

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

It depends on my mood. I’ll often reach for romance, but enjoy fantasy, sci fi, and thrillers too.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

There’s really no way to choose one overall favorite. My favorite recent movie is Across the Spiderverse, hands down. It’s a brilliant series.

15–What is your favorite season?

Whichever one I’m in!

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I don’t really. It feels like another day to me. I fully respect it’s important to some folks, so I’ll often do things if they want to, but for myself I would – and have – forget it all together.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Legendborn and Bloodmarked – if you haven’t read them, please do, even if they’re outside of your usual genre. They’re brilliant.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

One I don’t have to prepare! I have a lot of food allergies, so the list of people who can cook for me is incredibly short. But, just generally, probably Italian, as a lot of my childhood comfort foods are old recipes from my mum’s family.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

What is this “free time” you speak of? That’s writing time!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

Something Wicked book 3, “Blood will have Blood”, is out later this year and I am very excited to share it!

Villains By Necessity

I follow the rules when they’re fair, but since when has love ever been fair? There’s a power vacuum triggering issues between the magi and vampires that’s threateningto unleash a nightmare. Vampires, witches, and fae I can fight. That’s all in a day’s work. Butmy enemies’ choice of weapon is the most terrifying of all—love.I’m paid to guide the magickal members of our community. I won’t have an obsession-fuelledteam of witches running an abusive, Cupid-esque racket. And I definitely won’t let my clientbe drawn back into their horrific web.One thing’s for sure, love has a dark underside, and it’s coming for my client—but first, it’llhave to go through me.
