Felicity Heaton | 20 Questions: INFLAMED BY AN INCUBUS

April 7, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

INFLAMED BY AN INCUBUS, which is book 19 in my fated mates paranormal romance series, Eternal Mates.

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Fated to be together. Cursed to be apart. Swept up in a tempest of danger and with a dark threat on the rise, can Fenix find the one who cursed them before fate steals his mate from him this time? Or will the soul-searing passion that blazes between them burn everything to ashes again to restart the cycle?

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The hero, Fenix, was introduced in previous books so we already knew where he lived, but the story itself takes place in several locations: Scotland, London, and other places in England, plus some time in Hell, America and Norway. It’s quite the jet-set book. The Eternal Mates series is mostly set in the UK and Europe, with plenty of action in Hell too! I love writing about all the paranormal species that call Hell their home.

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. And not just because it might get me closer to her friend, Archer, who I might be crushing on. Haha. Seriously though, I’d love to spend some time with Evelyn.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Loyal. Passionate. Determined.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That Americans call a water stopcock a water shut-off valve or stop valve. It took quite a bit of Googling to find that one out.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I write straight through and then wait a few weeks for my editor to get the book back to me, and then I edit the book. I never edit as I go.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Cinnamon anything. Especially cinnamon ice cream and cinnamon biscuits. I’m a fiend for cinnamon.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

Pandemonium. Right now, it needs a really good tidy, which is irritating me as I like an orderly space. On a good day, when I don’t have boxes of books and stationery and other things taking up floor space, it’s a rather neat affair. I have a purple velvet chesterfield armchair beside my oak desk, and I face the one dark purple wall in my office (the rest are cream) and on that wall is a mounted original poster of The Lost Boys, which I’ve had since the film came out in 1987. I was only 9 at the time, but I already loved all things vampire. Behind me, I have two glass-fronted white bookshelves that contain my books, and lots of memorabilia from Star Wars, various anime and movies, and the Destiny video games. I also have several whiteboards, including my kanban board for all my projects. I also overlook our garden and the field beyond it and can pass a few minutes of rest time watching the birds and squirrels visiting the garden.

10–Who is an author you admire?

There are several authors in my genre I like to read, but if I had to pick ones I admire, it was probably women generations ago, like the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen, and Elizabeth Gaskell. I love their works and that they chose to work in a time when it wasn’t really accepted for women to do such things.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

Probably all the books I read in my formative years. All of them shaped the creative side of me and stirred a passion for writing and storytelling.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I’m actually self-published, so I’ve never really had ‘the call’ as it were. Some of my books have been picked up for audiobook by big publishers like Audible and Tantor Media though, which was really cool. But I’ve been self-published since 2003 so I’m quite happy handling my books and probably wouldn’t hand any over to a publisher for anything other than translations or audiobooks now.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Paranormal romance.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Far too many to list. I can’t pick one. Probably The Lost Boys if I had to choose just one.

15–What is your favorite season?

I love the changing colors.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With cava and cupcakes on a terrace in Barcelona! It’s a tradition we started a few years ago as we absolutely love travelling to Barcelona at least once a year. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to go since 2019 because of the pandemic and I’m dying to get back there. These days I make do with cupcakes I’ve made and cava on our patio with the firepit going if the weather allows. April in the UK can often be a bit chilly or wet! Or sometimes it likes to snow.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

So many TV shows. The Witcher. I love the games and Henry Cavill does an excellent job as Geralt. Bosch – that show is awesome. We also just recently watched the new Reacher TV series and that was really great. Definitely recommended.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Oh, it varies. I love food from all around the world.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I game with my family. I play Destiny with my mum most days and my nephews and two of my sisters too. I also love getting out into the garden in the warmer months to grow vegetables and going on long country walks from my house with my husband.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m gearing up to release CRAVED BY A WOLF, which is book 20 in my Eternal Mates series, on April 19th and I’ll be following that with BEWITCHED BY A VAMPIRE in the same series. Later in the year, I’ll be wrapping up my Guardians of Hades series with Hades and then Persephone.
