Hudson Lin | 20 Questions: GOING PUBLIC

March 29, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

GOING PUBLIC

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Executive assistant Elvin is used to cleaning up after his playboy boss, Ray. But when a routine business trip uncovers a secret drug ring, not even Elvin can bail Ray out of the mess. They must work together to beat the law and admit their love for each other in the process.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I live and work in Toronto, so it made sense to set the book in a city I’m familiar with.

4–Would you hang out with Raymond in real life?

Definitely. Especially if he invites me to his private rooftop pool or we hop on a plane for a dinner and a show on Broadway!

5–What are three words that describe Elvin?

Caretaker, Loyal, Ruthlessly Efficient (I cheated )

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

The minimum-security prisons in Canada look more like country clubs than jails.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A little of both? To be honest, it changes with every book. Sometimes the path to the end of a book is clear and I can just to press forward. Other times, I get lost somewhere along the way and the only thing to do is go back and edit until the path becomes clear again.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Eating ice cream directly out of the tub. It tastes better that way!

9–Describe your writing space/office!

My “office” is a corner of my living room. I have a big desk where I haphazardly dump a bunch of stuff, and a large bookshelf that houses not only books, but a portion of my plant collection.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Sam Burns writes MM fantasy and PNR romance. We met in a NaNoWriMo cabin years ago when we were both starting our writing careers. We’re still in the same author group and I really admire the discipline she brings to her career. There are a lot of opinions about how to be a successful author, some more valid than others. But Sam doesn’t let herself get side-tracked by any of the noise. She writes stories that she loves and publishes book after book after book. Her diligence has brought her great success and if I could enjoy even a fraction of that, I’d be deliriously happy.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

BRAIDING SWEETGRASS by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The book is part memoir, part Indigenous folklore, and part science (specifically botany). Kimmerer uses stories from her own life to illustrate how modern-day science and Indigenous knowledge are inherently complementary. It is beautifully written with gentleness and care. It is at times both heart-wrenching and hilarious. And it’s an honest account of the responsibility we all have to preserve our environment.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I was in my parents’ basement when I got a call from my editor, Stephanie Doig of Carina Press. I had pitched the Jade Harbour series only a week or two earlier and was really surprised they jumped on it so quickly.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romance, of course! As long as it has a happily ever after, I’m not too picky. I’ll read any gender/sexuality pairing (though, the more queer, the better), and any sub-genre. I’m currently on a historical kick thanks to Bridgerton, but I love me some paranormal, sci-fi, and suspense. Ironically, even though I write contemporary romance, I don’t read that much of it.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

I don’t really have one? I was asked this question once, when I was a teenager, and the answer I gave was Pirates of the Caribbean, so I’ll go with that again. I still have the DVD!

15–What is your favorite season?

I love winter. I know, I’m weird. I love the Christmas holiday season with the lights and the festivities. I love the firework displays on New Year’s Eve. I love the Lunar New Year, usually in February. And I love being huddled on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate watching the snow drift down from the sky. (Just don’t ask me to shovel the white stuff.)

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Eating, ideally surrounded by friends and family.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I really enjoyed the historical romance The Suffragette Scandal, by Courtney Milan, which is part of her Brothers Sinister series. The heroine is a feminist who bucks all of society’s expectations by founding her own newspaper, pursuing investigative journalism, and organizing protests. She’s fearless and the hero can barely keep up with her. It’s wonderful.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Taiwanese food, hands down. Generally, I’d say any kind of Chinese food, but if we’re being specific, the street food in Taiwan is unparalleled. I always gain at least ten pounds when I visit Taiwan.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

In order of importance: eat; knit; read/watch TV/listen to podcasts.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

I’m working on a new series about the imperial family of a fictional Asian island kingdom. Think Crazy Rich Asians x Harry & Meghan x one of those Christmas royalty movies (minus the Christmas).

Hudson Lin was raised by conservative immigrant parents and grew up straddling two cultures with oftentimes conflicting perspectives on life. Instead of conforming to either, she has sought to find a third way that brings together the positive elements of both.

Having spent much of her life on the outside looking in, Lin likes to write stories about outsiders who fight to carve out their place in society, and overcome everyday challenges to find love and happily ever afters.

When not engrossed in a story, Lin knits, drinks tea, and works the 9 to 5 in the beautiful city of Toronto, Canada.
