Jaci Burton | Down on Her Luck Divorcee Meets Guy Who Renovates Houses

December 12, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

HOUSEBROKE

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Down on her luck divorcee meets guy who renovates houses. They move in together in a mutually beneficial relationship that doesn’t involve sex. In the beginning anyway. And there are multiple rescue dogs!

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I wanted HEA, humidity and sunshine with occasional storms and lots of pretty houses near the ocean. Florida just seemed like a good idea.

4–Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Of course. By the time I finish a book I know everything there is to know about my characters. We could definitely hang out and have long talks.

5–What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Independent. Caring. Determined.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned a lot about rescue dogs, though I’ve always had rescue dogs of my own. But the process of fostering a rescue dog is quite different. And it’s hard to let them go!

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I don’t edit the book until I’ve finished it, though I will go back a few pages each morning before I start working to refresh my memory, so there might be a little tweaking then.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Chocolate.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I don’t have an office, so I tend to write on the sofa. That way the dogs and I can cuddle.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Oh, there are so many hard-working authors I admire. And too many to name just one. But a few are Nora Roberts, Shannon Stacey, Darby Kane, Vivian Arend, Rebekah Weatherspoon, Beverly Jenkins, Elle Cosimano, Alisha Rai, Jesse Q. Sutanto, Ali Hazelwood.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

I’m going to say Kathleen Woodiwiss because The Flame and the Flower was my introduction to romance many long years ago, and I’m so grateful for that.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I started out in digital publishing twenty years ago, and my ‘call’ was actually an email. I was so shocked and excited to find out my book was going to be published. That email started my career and I’m forever grateful for that.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

I love contemporary romance, because that’s what I write. But I also love thrillers, fantasy, paranormal, autobiographies, and just about anything that sparks an interest.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

Again, tough to answer because I have many favorites. But I’m going to say Aliens because Ripley is a total badass.

15–What is your favorite season?

Right now, it’s Fall because I’m tired of sweating.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Dinner out and, of course, cake.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I’m doing this Q&A in October and I just finished watching The House of Usher series on Netflix. Fantastic ensemble cast and every single one of them nailed their characters. The writing was exceptional, and I didn’t realize how much Poe I had studied in school because I knew each episode title and the verses that were quoted. It was some seriously good TV.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

My seriously refined palate must advise you that I’m a big fan of pizza.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Naps. I highly recommend them.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

THE BACKUP BRIDE PROPOSAL, Book 4 of my Boots and Bouquets series is coming up next in April, 2024.

HOUSEBROKE by Jaci Burton

Housebroke

A millionaire and a woman who thinks he’s a house flipper are stuck living in a house together with a menagerie of rescue dogs as roommates, in this heartfelt romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Jaci Burton.

After her ex took all their money and bailed, Hazel Bristow is left broke and homeless. A kind friend whose home is on the market lets Hazel and her foster dogs stay there until it sells. It’s the perfect setup, until her friend forgets to tell Hazel she’s sold the house.

Linc Kennedy is shocked to find Hazel and her pups squatting in the house he just bought, but after some negotiating—she offers to cook amazing meals for him in return for a paycheck—he agrees to let her remain while he’s renovating the place. Linc tells Hazel he’s an investor who renovates homes for fun—he just leaves out the part about being wealthy.

Hazel’s intrigued by Linc. He’s funny, sweet, ridiculously hot, and loves dogs almost as much as she does. But her track record with men? Not great. She worries her trust meter isn’t in working order.

Linc’s never met anyone like the quirky beauty who puts everyone’s needs—human and canine—before her own. He didn’t tell her about his wealth because he’s been burned by women who only wanted him for his money. But with Hazel, he’s never felt more like himself. Now he has to figure out how to tell her the truth without losing her. Because Linc realizes what he feels for her isn’t puppy love—it’s true love.
