Jessica Clare | Perky Apprentice Takes on Grumpy Warlock

April 6, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

WHAT THE HEX

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Perky apprentice takes on grumpy warlock. It’s a boss romance with a grumpy/sunshine, witchy twist.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

After GO HEX YOURSELF, Penny and Willem obviously needed their story told. I had to do it!

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. Penny would be the best sort to hang out with. She’d have the menu memorized at the restaurant, be there 15 minutes early to snag the best seats and keep the conversation rolling.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Starchy, Snobby, and Ginger

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

The Romans had a lot of fertility deities.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I wait until I’m done!

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Iced coffee. Does that count?

9–Describe your writing space/office!

A mess. It’s always a mess.

10–Who is an author you admire?

I am and will always remain a Kresley Cole fangirl.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

The first one I sold!

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

For this particular series, I told my editor I was burnt out on cowboys. She said, “How do you feel about witches?” And I said that I had an idea for Roman witchcraft, not traditional witches…and the rest is history.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romance, especially with a side of paranormal, monster, fantasy, what have you.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

I can’t think of one, but my favorite TV show is Arrested Development.

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall!

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Sobbing into a pillow at this point (just kidding).

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I thought Everything Everywhere All At Once was fantastic, and as for a TV show, Survivor! It’s 44 seasons in and still as fun to watch as ever.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I’m a weenie so nothing spicy. Is cake a type of cuisine? Because I’m going with cake.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I really am unexciting, so I’ll say reading and hugging and squeezing my cats until they run away from me.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

That is an excellent question and I’m not entirely sure!

WHAT THE HEX by Jessica Clare

What the Hex

Enemies-to-lovers has never been more enchanting in this witchy romantic comedy from the New York Times bestselling author of Go Hex Yourself.

Penny Roundtree wants nothing more than to be a familiar to a witch. She’s been a member of the Society of Familiars ever since she was old enough to join the Fam. There’s just a small problem—no one’s hiring. Witches and warlocks are so long-lived that there are far more familiars available than witches to train them. So when an unorthodox arrangement to apprentice under the table to a forbidden warlock presents itself, she takes it.

Willem Sauer is banned from having a familiar due to past transgressions, thereby limiting his magic-casting abilities. Unfortunately for the surly, Prussian warlock, he has no choice but to work with enthusiastic Penny as a familiar. They immediately clash like dried roan horsehair and honeycomb gathered by moonlight (it’s a terrible spell combination, ask anyone).

Casting spells has delightful perks Penny never could have dreamed of, but also greater dangers. Someone is targeting Penny. Willem and Penny must work together to catch their enemy, and if their ploy requires a little kissing on the side, who is to question the rules of magic?
