Judy Foreman | A scallop fisherwoman and a female journalist join forces to stop an evil offshore wind developer

August 17, 2026

What is the title of your latest release?
THE SCALLOP PLOT

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
It’s a thriller in which a feisty scallop fisherwoman and a persistent female journalist join forces to stop an evil offshore wind developer, during which the nasty right-wind anti-wind folks get their due.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I’ve lived near Provincetown MA for years and love the place.

Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Absolutely.

What are three words that describe your hero?
There are actually three heroines, and I’d describe all three as brave, smart and very heroic.

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned a lot about both the good and bad sides of offshore wind – how much we need it and how bad it can be in some cases for the marine environment.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Kind of both.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Brownies, homemade. I have a great recipe!

Describe your writing space/office!
It looks out on the wonderful Charles River in Cambridge, MA. The walls are filled with family pictures, and the bookshelves are crammed full of books of all genres.

Who is an author you admire?
Kristin Hannah.

Is there a book that changed your life?
My own first thriller, CRISPR’D. As a lifelong journalist, it was the process of writing this first foray into fiction that showed me how much joy there is in creating a story from scratch.

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Several times. The first was when Oxford University Press told me they were going to publish my first book, A NATION IN PAIN, and then, when they wanted a sequel, and again when they said they’d publish my third medical book, EXERCISE IS MEDICINE. It was equally exciting to hear that Skyhorse was going to publish CRISPR’D and that She Writes Press would publish my memoir, LET THE MORE LOVING ONE BE ME. And of course, I was thrilled again when She Writes said they would publish THE SCALLOP PLOT.

What’s your favorite genre to read?
mysteries, thrillers and historical fiction

What’s your favorite movie?
The one I just saw about the poet, Mary Oliver.

What is your favorite season?
Summer, summer, summer.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
With family and friends, good food and wine.

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
As mentioned, the movie about the poet Mary Oliver.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
French, Italian

What do you do when you have free time?
Free time, what’s that?

What can readers expect from you next?
I’m pondering that… perhaps another thriller. Stay tuned.

THE SCALLOP PLOT by Judy Foreman

scallop

In this thriller, star investigative reporter Samantha Fuller joins a feisty Cape Cod fisherwoman to foil a wind farm developer’s evil plot to poison precious ocean scallop beds—and finds herself facing off against right-wing climate deniers.

In Provincetown, MA, feisty scallop fisherwoman Isabella Ferreira goes up against a sleazy wind farm developer, Olaf Svensson, who wants to install wind turbines in the ocean right off the coast of Cape Cod.

At a nearby scallop hatchery, marine biologists Leif and Astrid Borgen are already using the new gene editing technique CRISPR to insert a growth hormone gene into scallop embryos to make them bigger and thus more profitable—all of which is legal. But unbeknownst to the hatchery owner, Svensson is also paying the pair to insert another gene—one that causes PSP, paralytic shellfish poisoning. If this works, no one will ever eat scallops from this site again, thus freeing it up for Svensson’s turbines.

Enter Pulitzer Prize–winning Boston Times reporter Samantha Fuller. Together with Isabella, she slowly uncovers Svensson’s deadly plot—but not before hundreds of people die. Along the way, love blossoms, tragedies occur, and the subtleties of the pro- and anti-wind power groups are exposed.
