Julie Miller | Conversations in Character with Zoe Stockman

Book Title: CRIME SCENE K-9
Character Name: Zoe Stockman

How would you describe your family or your childhood?
A little sad—my mom died when I was young. But I was raised by a wonderful, loving, supportive dad and two big brothers. (You may have met Dad—KCPD Sgt. Brian Stockman—in other stories set in the Kansas City Crime Lab.)

What is your greatest talent?
The way my brain works.

Significant other?
I wish.

Biggest challenge in relationships?
My anxiety disorder.

Where do you live?
Kansas City, Missouri

Do you have any enemies?
More than one, actually. Not sure what I’ve done to deserve all this unwanted attention.

How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
My apartment used to be my sanctuary—but now it has become my prison. I’d love to be outdoors, but until I know where the threats are coming from, I simply can’t risk it. I’m better off staying inside and away from people.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Well… I’m pregnant. But I haven’t told anyone yet. And the man I love has the smartest, bravest, bestest dog ever. His name is Sky. I think Sky likes me better than Levi (his human partner) does.

What do you do for a living?
Crime Scene Investigator. I’ve always loved puzzles, and I’m super observant. I love working crime scenes—not the crime itself since I always feel an attachment to the victims, and I ache for the loss to their friends and family—but finding answers. Finding justice. There are too many bad guys in the world. But if my work can put a few of them behind bars, then I feel useful.

Greatest disappointment?
Myself. How I treated Levi Callahan. I thought I was protecting him, but it turned out I was only hurting him.

Greatest source of joy?
The secret I’m carrying.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
I’m pretty introverted, so parties and going out on the town are not my thing. But I love being in the outdoors, camping and hiking and fishing like my dad and brothers—yeah, I’m a bit of a tomboy at heart.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
Letting my anxiety overrule my heart and my instincts.

What keeps you awake at night?
My past mistakes. A couple of doozies I’d rather not share.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Well… A stalker? A serial killer case where the victims seem to look like me that I’m determined to solve? How to tell the man who hates me that he’s going to be a father?
Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you? I want Levi, so badly. When we were good, he made me feel safe. My anxiety wasn’t a big deal for him. He saw me—Zoe—and not the sad, anti-social mental case my ex-boyfriend tried to make me believe I was.

Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
I can’t be with Levi—and keep him safe from the stalker who’s making every effort to gaslight me and harm the people I love.

CRIME SCENE K-9 by Julie Miller

Protectors at K-9 Ranch #5

His faithful K-9 companion

reunited him with his fate.

Master Sergeant Levi Callahan thought Zoe Stockman was the perfect lover…until she ghosted him. Figuring the only reliable companion was his loyal K-9 partner, Sky, Levi tried to forget Zoe, even after his medical discharge brought him back home. Yet home was now a place from which Zoe had practically disappeared, cutting all contact with everyone, not just him. Levi knew he would find answers only after he and Sky tracked Zoe down. The Marine just hadn’t imagined the terror Zoe had endured while he was away, or the surprise she’d been attempting to keep safe.

About Julie Miller

Julie Miller

Born and raised in Missouri, Julie now lives in Nebraska.
She attributes her passion for writing romance to the fairy
tales she read growing up, and shyness. Her family
encouraged her to write down all those feelings she
couldn’t express and she soon developed a love of the
written word.
Today, she gets continued support from her fellow members
in PRW, her husband Scott, and son Ryne.

Inspired by the likes of Agatha Christie and Encyclopedia
Brown, she believed the only thing better than a good
mystery was a good romance. She decided to combine the two
and began writing for Harlequin Intrigue in 1999. She
loves writing gritty, action-packed, emotionally-compelling
stories.
