Jus Accardo | A Young Druid Meets a Handsome Fae Royal at the Winter Court

August 3, 2023

1–What is the title of your latest release?

OMEN OF ICE

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

When a young druid arrives at the Winter Court to act as the protector for a handsome Fae royal, she discovers that everyone is hiding a secret—and his might be the key to saving the world—or destroying it.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The idea behind Derriga came to me a long time ago. I’ve been playing with it off and on for years. When I came up with Omen’s characters, Derriga was the perfect home for them!

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Um, hell yes. Tania is a badass. And though she doesn’t like to admit it, she’s got a killer sense of humor (Valen would disagree…)

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Depends on who you ask… Tania would say that she’s loyal, focused, and brave. Valen, on the other hand, would say that she’s beautiful, stubborn, and in desperate need of some fun. He’d also argue that last one was one word because he said it really, really fast.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

You should NEVER shake a bottle of iced tea unless you’re sure the cover is on… Also, that I REALLY like the word wiggle (my editor says I am never allowed to use it again).

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Probably something in between. It really depends on how far I get with a project before I have to switch to something else for a bit. When I get back to it, I start over so I can catch myself up. In doing that, though, I always tend to edit what’s already there before continuing on.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I make these chocolate glazed Kahlua cupcakes… I swear I could eat every last one—without feeling an ounce of guilt.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

…Messy. I’m not one of those people who has this, like, pretty writing space that just, you know, INSPIRES. Nope. Mine is chaotic and full of dog hair.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Honestly? I can’t really pick just one. The truth is, I admire all authors. The dedication it takes to write a book, to see it through to the end, is impressive.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

I’ve always loved to read, but I remember finishing Mary Stanton’s The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West and thinking, this is what I want to do when I grow up.

Then there’s Nightlife by Rob Thurman. I’m not sure if this is a case of it changed my life, or that I was reading it when I decided to change my life… But, I was reading Nightlife when I made the decision to pass on my spot at the C.I.A to pursue writing.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

This is going to sound weird, but I can’t say I remember THE CALL. I do remember the call that led up to it all, though…

I was in a chat room with my crit partners, and I got a call from one of the editors at Soucebooks. They had a call for unagented manuscripts and I’d submitted, not actually expecting anything. But, THEY CALLED. No lie, I fell off my chair. She was so enthusiastic about my book, and I remember the phone call was just so uplifting and positive.

In the end it didn’t work out with them, but it got me my first agent, and my first book, TOUCH, sold, I think it was like, two months later.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Fantasy.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

The Last Unicorn

15–What is your favorite season?

At the risk of insulting Valen, I’m a fall girl all the way.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I’m a homebody. Give me takeout and a good movie and I’m more than happy to sit on the couch with my husband and our dogs.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

The Witcher. (Books and TV series) Henry Cavill was BORN to play Geralt (HINT, HINT, he’d make a killer Arthas if a proper WoW movie was made…). You know how RDJ was born to play Ironman? Yeah. It’s just like that. I cried a little when I heard he was dropping from the series.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Honestly? Anything with garlic.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

I love photography. I like working on my deck and setting up the camera so I can snap all the cool birds that come around. We put all kinds of feeders out and it gets busy! And, a little messy, lol. I’m also a huge World of Warcraft fan. I’ve been playing for almost 18 years now!

20–What can readers expect from you next?

The second book in the series, Nature of Frost (title still not final) will be out next year! Aside from that, I’m working on a fun urban fantasy that I hope to be able to talk more about soon!

OMEN OF ICE by Jus Accardo

Omen of Ice

Keltania Tunne has spent her whole life training to become a bodyguard for a Winter Fae. It’s the highest of honors for a druid…only when Tania arrives at the Winter Court for the first time, nothing is what she expected.

Her assignment is the heir to the throne, Valen, and he doesn’t want her protection. In fact, he wants her gone. Yesterday. But Tania will not compromise, even if he is the most arrogant jackass she’s ever met—because something isn’t right in the Winter Court.

Everyone has secrets. From the Winter Lord to the kitchen maids to the rising faction that wants the prince dead—no one is who they seem. And now it’s up to Tania to keep her sacred oath and protect Valen, even when his smart mouth makes her skate the razor-thin edge between love and hate.

But the more she gets to know him, the more she realizes his secret is the biggest of all—and might just get them both killed.
