Book Title: RESLIENT – Portrait of a Woman #1
Character Name: Zoe Robinson
How would you describe your family or your childhood?
My childhood was so much fun. I was a flyer on our cheerleading squad, and that’s where I met my best friends, Tiffany Eisenhower, Harmony Jones, and Morticia Smith. Over twenty years later, and we’re still best friends, lifting each other up and supporting each other every step of the way.
What was your greatest talent?
I’m really good at cooking. I started as a caterer, but now I have bigger aspirations. I want to be a party planner.
Significant other?
My ex-husband, Max Robinson, was Mayflower’s pride and joy fire chief. Hitting a mid-life crisis, he decided after four children and twenty years of marriage that he didn’t want to be a husband or a father anymore. He left us to go backpacking across the US and find himself. I went straight from my parents’ house to his, so I’ve never been on my own until now. I’m not allowed to have a mid-life crisis because one of us has to be responsible and take of our family.
Biggest challenge in relationships?
Giving way more to the person I love then I get in return. I never put myself first. I gave up everything for my marriage to take care of my husband, children, and house leaving little time for anything else.
Where do you live?
A small town in Massachusetts called Mayflower, after the state flower. It’s an old-fashioned town with set-in-their-ways citizens, but it’s my home and all I’ve ever known.
Do you have any enemies?
Bitsy Beaumont. I went to high school with Bitsy. Now she is the town’s main party planner. Mayor Edwards is looking for someone to plan the Labor Day Bash. I threw my hat in the ring, and now Bitsy hates me.
How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
I’m still in Mayflower Massachusetts. My parents retired in Florida and are always trying to get me to move south, but Mayflower is my home. I don’t want to uproot my children any more than their father already has. His parents, Lil and John Robsinson—now Lilabelle and Johnboy since they’ve become as southern as their new home in the Carolinas—are still a big part of our lives. They compete with my parents for the best grandparents’ award on every occasion.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
No pets, but I have four children. Lexi is sixteen, Troy is thirteen, Bobby is six, and little Katy is three.
What do you do for a living?
I was a wife, mother, housekeeper, chef, taxi driver, accountant…you name it. A Jill of all traits and master of none, until now. Now, I am a damn good party planner, and I intend to win the bid for the Labor Day Bash and prove to this town that I am more than Mrs. Robinson, the fire chief’s ex-wife.
Greatest disappointment?
That I wasted so many years of my life putting my husband first and forgetting about my own hopes, dreams, and needs.
Greatest source of joy?
Reconnecting with Dr. Chaz Anderson again. Chaz used to be Chuckie, aka the endearingly dorky water boy for our football team. He is four years younger and always had a crush on me. Twenty years later, I’m the one who’s dorky with a crush on him while he’s turned into Dr. Hunkarama.
What keeps you awake at night?
Worrying about what the town and my children will think if I put myself first and date a younger man. On top of that, my oldest daughter, Lexi, is in the middle of a crisis of her own. All four children need me, and I’m pulled in several directions…but when is it my turn to be happy?
RESILIENT by Kari Lee Harmon
After twenty years of marriage, Zoe Robinson’s husband left to go backpacking across the U.S. and find himself, but all he found was that he didn’t want to be a husband or father anymore.
Devastated but resilient, Zoe has spent the past two years picking up the pieces of her life and starting over. Her children have issues, her house is falling apart, and her catering business isn’t enough to pay the bills. Thank goodness for chilled wine and best friends, because forty isn’t looking so fabulous.
Her weekly girls’ night is what’s keeping her sane.
Zoe’s persistent mother just wants to see her happy, but Zoe insists she’s fine on her own. She’s focusing on taking her catering business to the next level as a party planner, despite her relentless competition sabotaging her every step of the way.
She’s come to like sleeping in the middle. Her feet might get cold, but there’s no risk of her warm heart getting broken again. Until she meets the charming, younger Dr. Chaz Anderson, who is more than willing to help with an offer she’s finding hard to refuse.
Zoe must decide whether to stay in control and in the middle, or choose a side and let someone in.
