Kathleen Ayers | 20 Questions: FORGETTING THE EARL

April 13, 2022

1–What is the title of your latest release?

FORGETTING THE EARL. It is the first book in a 3-book series of novellas about three very arrogant earls and the women who tame them.

2–What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Honora Drevenport is a young, awkward, young lady who falls in love with the dashing Earl of Southwell and is humiliated in the process. Years later as a beautiful, sought-after widow, Honora vows to make Southwell fall in love with her and extract her revenge.

3–How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I write early Victorian (1837-1845) and love lords and ladies, so England was the obvious choice

4–Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. Honora has a great sense of humor, loves history, and wants to set off and explore the world. And she’s a hopeful romantic, which I can appreciate.

5–What are three words that describe your hero?

Intelligent. Ruggedly handsome. Daring. He’s Indiana Jones if Indiana Jones was an earl who liked to make maps and travel the Amazon. What I like most is that Southwell liked Honora when she was chubby and awkward. He values her intelligence while also cutting off her corset.

6–What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That hippos are far more dangerous than crocodiles on the Nile.

7–Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Edit as I go. I try to outline but it never works out for me. As I write I get to know my characters and their motivations better, so I end up changing my beginning to match my new ending.

8–What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Unlike Honora who adores tarts, I love pizza. And a good charcuterie board.

9–Describe your writing space/office!

I have a small office with a very uncomfortable desk and chair. I find myself on my laptop in a comfy chair in the living room or out on the patio most of the time. I can’t write if it’s too quiet, so I usually have one of those really bad paranormal shows on TV in the background.

10–Who is an author you admire?

Romance author is definitely Lisa Kleypas. I love the way she writes. If we are talking authors in general, Stephen King. He’s brilliant.

11–Is there a book that changed your life?

I read so much (several books a week even while writing) that this is a tough question. I think all books change my life, whether to give me a break from reality or to give me ideas. I really love fantasy and am considering writing a dark fae romance.

12–Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I’ve been self-published since 2013 and didn’t really consider going the traditional route. But when Dragonblade approached me for this series my first thought was…they meant to contact someone else. Or is this a scam? I was incredibly flattered to be offered the opportunity to write a series for Dragonblade.

13–What’s your favorite genre to read?

Another tough question. I read almost everything depending on my mood at the time, but romance is my favorite. I’ll read fantasy, thrillers, horror you name it. I won’t read anything relating to solving a crime or mystery. No police procedurals. If I’m stuck solving a mystery it better be because there’s an ancient curse or creature someone has disturbed.

14–What’s your favorite movie?

I watch The Matrix every single time it comes on. I have no idea why. Keanu Reeves might have something to do with it. I also love Pride & Prejudice (the version with Keira Knightly). I’ve watched it dozens of times.

15–What is your favorite season?

Fall. I love everything about it except pumpkin spice. I grew up in the Northeast and miss the change of seasons.

16–How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I’m not big on birthday celebrations. But if I can have a good meal or a bottle of wine with friends or family, I’m pretty happy.

17–What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I loved the Gilded Age. The clothes alone make it worth watching. I think Bridgerton is so much fun. But if you want total edge of your seat…watch Ozark. The entire show is one giant nail-biting roller coaster ride.

18–What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian hands down. I’ve never met a bowl of pasta I didn’t like.

19–What do you do when you have free time?

Read! Preferably in the pool. But there’s usually a home improvement project that requires my attention. It turns out baseboards need repainting every couple of years and weeds don’t pull themselves.

20–What can readers expect from you next?

There are two more books in the Arrogant Earls series from Dragonblade Publishing (CHASING THE EARL and ENTICING THE EARL). I also have two more releases in The Beautiful Barringtons (my current series) coming up this year, A RECIPE FOR A ROGUE and THE MAKING OF A GENTLEMAN.

FORGETTING THE EARL by Kathleen Ayers

Arrogant Earls #1

Forgetting the Earl

Seducing the Earl of Southwell is the perfect revenge…unless Honora loses her heart.

Honora Drevenport is a young, awkward, barely acceptable young lady when she first meets the dashing Earl of Southwell and falls hopelessly in love.

After suffering a terrible humiliation at the hands of Southwell’s friends, Honora’s family forces her to marry. Years later, Honora is no longer unhappily wed but a stunning widow and the toast of London. A woman who has never forgotten the Earl of Southwell or what happened that terrible night.

Honora’s plan is simple; make Southwell fall in love with her and exact her revenge.

Note: This series is part of Dragonblade’s Flame line, so this is a sexy, steamy, and scorching-hot read with multiple sex scenes. Be advised.”
