Book Title: WHITEOUT
Character Name: Maya Sullivan
How would you describe your family or your childhood?
I had a great childhood. My parents were lovely believers who raised me to be confident in who I am and where I was going. When I decided to be a trauma surgeon, they were all in with their support, both emotionally and financially.
What was your greatest talent?
I was always the one taking care of the wounded animals on the ranch during my summer breaks. Any time a horse came up lame, after the vet left, I did my best to hurry the healing along.
Significant other?
Not at the moment and not really looking, to be honest, but then I ran into Gideon Price, my teenage crush, and I’ll have to admit, the feelings came rushing back. Just more adult now. But the timing stinks so I’m going to have to do my best to ignore them. He’s not making it easy, though, because I can tell he’s interested. Sigh…
Biggest challenge in relationships?
I’m a take charge kind of person so I know I can come across a bit intimidating sometimes. It can throw a lot of men off and scare them away. But that’s okay. I need someone with enough confidence in himself who can handle that, so if they decide to run, I wave goodbye.
Where do you live?
I live in Whitestone, Tennessee. It’s a fictional town my author made up. But it’s right outside of Nashville.
Do you have any enemies?
Well, not that I know of, but it looks like I was wrong because someone seems determined to end me while we’re trapped in the aftermath of this avalanche.
How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
I love, love, love Silver Pines Ski Resort. I grew up coming here with my parents and childhood friends. It’s why I’m here now. I’m originally from TN, but spent so much time here in Colorado that it feels like a second home to me. I just wish I knew who wanted me dead so desperately.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Neither right now. Well, unless you count ranch animals. I do have cows, horses, chickens, and more.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a trauma surgeon. I work at the hospital part time right now while I try to finalize the plans for the ranch. It will be a phenomenal place for veterans suffering from PTSD and more. I’m really praying that Broken Chains is a healing place and people will leave there refreshed and renewed.
Greatest disappointment?
That things never really worked out between Gideon and me.
Greatest source of joy?
Right now, running into Gideon and two other high school buddies at the resort. It sort of feels like a family reunion in some ways. But my friend, Vance, is hurting. I can tell. He’s the type of person I’m working hard to help by using the ranch in the way I’m envisioning.
What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
Hm…that’s a good question. I love a good meal out in a fancy restaurant, and I love movies and soft pretzels by the fire. I don’t have much in the way of a true hobby. Maybe that’s because I love my work so much. I do love to ski, though. Does that count?
What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
Oof…I don’t like to talk about this much. It hurts. But I’ll share. When I was in the Army, there was an attack on the medical crew and my best friend, Laura was wounded. Horribly. I held her when she took her last breath knowing there was nothing I could do to save her. All my training and I couldn’t save her. It still haunts me.
What keeps you awake at night?
See the previous question.
What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Someone is out to kill me and I’d really like to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
I think I need a good dose of wisdom. I’d love to make sure that the ranch is everything it needs to be. A safe place. A healing place. I just need to know exactly how to make that happen.
Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
Time. It’s going to happen, it’s just going to take time to get there. And the aforementioned wisdom to see it through.
