Marie Patrick | Lucy Hart practices her Matchmaker Mischief

July 31, 2025

What is the title of your latest release?
THE MARSHAL & MRS. MORGAN

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Tresia Morgan has a plan, and it doesn’t include falling in love with Serenity’s new Marshal, but that’s only until Lucy Hart practices her Matchmaker Mischief.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
THE MARSHAL & MRS. MORGAN is the second book in the Matchmaker Mischief series, so I made up a town in the first story. It’s called Serenity and it’s somewhere that I would like to live. It’s just full of interesting people who are looking for love (although they might not realize it).

Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Yes, I most definitely would. Devlin Goodrich is a very good man. I’d hang out with Tresia Morgan, too! They make the sweetest couple.

What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Honest. Kind (kindness is a really big thing for me). Loving.

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
What did I learn? That sometimes you have to let the characters take the lead. They know where they’re going and sometimes, it’s a surprise to me (in the best way possible). I can’t tell you how many times I said – aloud to the dogs – I didn’t know that was going to happen!

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I edit as I write, usually after I get a chapter from my critique partner (we exchange chapters as soon as they’re done).

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
My go-to is pizza. Pepperoni, please. But I also indulge in ice cream (pistachio almond is my preferred, but I’ll take just about anything).

Describe your writing space/office!
I have a small office. Big enough for my desk, a couple file cabinets, and a futon, where my dogs sleep while I write. The shelves and the walls are full of pictures that are important to me and little knick-knacks that hold special meaning. I think it’s quite comfortable.

Who is an author you admire?
Oh, there are so many! Jennifer Ashley, Lexi Post, Catherine Coulter, Victoria Alexander, just to name a few.

Is there a book that changed your life?
LOVE’S TENDER FURY by Jennifer Wilde. It was my first romance, and I fell in love with the genre with the first page!

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Oh my gosh! It was one of the loveliest emails I had ever received (I still have it). I was so excited, I could barely contain myself. Of course, I had to tell just about everyone! There is something about a publisher telling you that they loved what you cried over, bled over, and struggled through that is/was so satisfying.

What’s your favorite genre to read?
I read just about everything – thrillers, horror, cozy mysteries, contemporary romance, but I always – always – come back to historical romance.

What’s your favorite movie?
It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s a tradition for me…I watch it every year on Christmas Eve (going on thirty years now). It’s one of the few movies I will not miss and yes, even though I tell myself I will not cry at the end, I always do.

What is your favorite season?
Autumn is my favorite time of year. I love the briskness in the air, the smell of wood smoke, and the hustle and bustle of getting ready for the holidays, although, there’s something to be said about Spring, too!

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
How would I like to celebrate it? By doing nothing. Just plant my backside on the couch and binge watch something or stick my nose in a book. To me, that’s the perfect birthday celebration.

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
The DH and I have been watching The Resident on Netflix. We’re both enjoying it. I’m still a big fan of NCIS and I’m liking Will Trent, too. Oh, and the new Matlock! As for movies, I really liked The Life List and Nonnas. Books? Any books by the authors I mentioned above. They’re all wonderful!

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Italian. Lasagna, baked ziti, manicotti…oh, I better stop…my mouth is starting to water.

What do you do when you have free time?
Free time? What’s that? No, seriously. I don’t have very much free time, but on those rare occasions when I do, I’m reading or trying to catch up on the television shows I’ve missed.

What can readers expect from you next?
Book Three in the Matchmaker Mischief series…I’m about thirty thousand words into THE MADAM AND MR. MACLEAN. My heroine is a bit different than the other heroines I’ve written, but her character growth is amazing!

THE MARSHAL & MRS. MORGAN by Marie Patrick

Matchmaker Mischief #2

Devlin Goodrich needed a change—a new life, a new town, a new job—and hopefully, the chance to leave behind the haunting memories of his wife’s death and the blame placed upon him by her mother. Accepting the position of Marshal in the little town of Serenity, New Mexico, far from his mother-in-law, might just fit the bill for him and his young daughter.

Tresia Morgan has a plan. She wants to take back Sullivan’s Emporium, the family store, from her cousin so when Serenity’s matchmaker offers Tresia the job of taking care of the new Marshal’s daughter in order earn the money needed to put her plan in motion, how can she say no, especially after meeting the captivating pair?

Despite his heartache, Devlin is not immune to Tresia’s kindness nor how wonderfully she cares for his daughter, as well as him. But when he’s forced to shoot another killer, his notoriety triples, putting Avery and Tresia in danger. Now he fears coming to Serenity may have been the worst mistake of his life.

About Marie Patrick

Marie Patrick

As with most writers, Marie has had a love affair with words for as long as she can remember. One of her fondest memories is of sitting in a rocking chair with her grandmother, reading “Little Golden” books. As she grew up, Marie read everything she could get her hands on – bookstores and libraries became her favorite places. In Marie’s opinion, there is nothing better than curling up in a comfortable chair and reading about far away places, history and ROMANCE and letting her imagination take flight. She will admit to being a romance junkie – from the moment she scoped out her first historical novel, saved up her babysitting money, and bought it, she wanted to be those women and live in those times and experience every ounce of romance she could.
The love affair has not stopped – in fact, it has grown over the years. On a trip to Arizona, where she now makes her home, Marie became inspired by the sometimes desolate yet beautiful landscape. She began to envision what it would be like to live in the past, when the west was untamed, when the good guys wore white hats, and the saloon girls always had hearts of gold. Marie says her romance with the west began with her first sunset over a sea of saguaro cacti but her inspiration doesn’t just come from the wild west. It comes from history itself. She is fascinated with pirates. Sailing ships. Trains. Men in uniform (or out of uniform). And lawmen with shiny badges.
So come along with Marie and see for yourself what makes history sizzle.
