Maud Woolf | Title Challenge: THIRTEEN WAYS TO KILL LULABELLE ROCK

January 4, 2024

Hi! My name is Maud Woolf and I’m the author of THIRTEEN WAYS TO KILL LULABELLE ROCK, a novel set in Bubble City, a glittering metropolis of the near future. In Bubble City, celebrities make copies of themselves known as Portraits to carry out all the many tasks required of them. Jaded actress Lulabelle Rock has twelve of these Portraits running around Bubble City- but now she’s looking for a change. Her thirteenth clone is created for a single purpose: to seek out and destroy her predecessors.

Now this is a long title to go through but there’s a reason it’s called a challenge! Having said that, I’m going to start off by cheating a little bit. It’s what Lulabelle would do after all.

13 is for our protagonist, the last of her kind.

W is for a weapon, designed with one purpose.

A is for assassination.

Y is for a yellow flower printed on a white van.

S is for sticking to the plan.

T is for Tarot, the major arcana.

O is for occupation; every Portrait has one.

K is for killing but killing with kindness.

I is for an industry that makes products of people.

L is for Lulabelle, the real deal, the OG.

L is for lights that shine neon-bright.

L is for learning that not everything can be simple.

U is the ugliness hidden by glamour.

L is for falling in love.

A is for the Artist, created to create.

B is for a single blue eye.

E is for eating, for pleasure not fuel.

L is for letting things slip.

L is for living, for choosing to live.

E is for empathy over efficiency.

R is for redemption and a chance to be free.

O is for orders, carried out or defied.

C is for the city that rises up out of the desert.

K is for the kaleidoscope; reflections and the complex patterns they make.

THIRTEEN WAYS TO KILL LULABELLE ROCK by Maud Woolf

Thirteen Ways to Kill Lulabelle Rock

A washed up star creates a clone tasked with eliminating other clones of herself; a whip-smart and thrilling sci-fi read that’s perfect for fans of Orphan Black, Killing Eve and Keeping it Real by Justina Robson.

Set in a world of the near future, the celebrity elite have access to a technology that allows them to make perfect copies of themselves, known as Portraits. These Portraits exist to fulfil all the various duties that come as the price of fame.

Our protagonist is the thirteenth copy made of the actress known as Lulabelle Rock. Her purpose is very simple: to track down and eliminate her predecessors.

While initially easy, her task is made difficult by the labyrinthine confusion of Bubble City and the unfortunate stirrings of a developing conscience. When she makes the mistake of falling in love with one of her targets, the would-be assassin faces the ultimate question; when you don’t want to kill yourself, what’s the alternative?
